Well, very generally, these are some genres of Trance:

Goa/ Psychadelic : Two genres that are pretty much the same, very psychotic (Surprise) and feature samples and weird sounds, kicks are very istinguishable. Psy and Goa also make the most use of Electric Guitars... Goa was the first Trance genre around, originating mainly in India with it's spiritual sounds.
Exmples would be :
S.U.N. Project , Infected Mushroom, Astral Projection.

Hard Trance - Often not very melodic, uses sounds that are unpleasent to the ear, buzzing and beeping. Very energetic.
Examples:

Cosmic Gate, DJ Scot Project, Dumonde (Which are kinda uplifting hard trance), Kai Tracid, Hennes & Cold.

Melodic Trance - Sometimes called Uplifting Trance (I have another definition for uplifting), uses melodies ussually in order to achieve emotional blasts in tracks. Examples would be:

Ferry Corsten, DJ Tiesto, Svenson& Gielen, Alpha Breed, Vincent De Moor, as well as the more commercial Alice DeeJay, Ian Van Dahl etc. which are considered EuroTrance, EuroDance, whatever, subgenres of Melodic Trance.

Progressive Trance - Calmer, smoother than the others, ussually does not have major buildups, breakdowns, emotions or mood changes. Most Progressive Trance is influenced by House.
Examples:

Sasha, Cass& Slide, James Holden.

not to forget deep trance

Deep Trance is more along the lines of a minimal sounding trance without breakdowns...but a more slow and steady buildup....
John Digweed and Sasha are like this...

Odori...I believe ur interpretation of progressive trance is wrong...
Progressive Trance is usually more buildupish and breakdownish....not really calm...most the time more energetic...

And Melodic Trance....it's not too heavy...its more of a mellow versoin of progressive that makes u wanna close ur eyes....

Please see Dj Tiesto's In Search of Sunrise Series for more melodic stuff.

Yeah my mistake my definition of Progressive fits more into Deep (Although I kinda categorize them as the same genre...)
