ok, I guess Ill have to chime in on this one. I worked at Avalon for 4 years while I was in school in Boston as DJ and in production with Fedor/Felix/Steve/John Lyons. As a manager Steve Adleman is terrible, but he doesnt need to be good because the Lyons Corp. has basically run everyone else out of Boston. They have NO competition like Exit does so they can afford to not care. Lyons Corp. owns ALL of Landsdowne St. and their partner is the head of concert licensing so Avalon gets all the big bands and tours as well. They are pretty much a 1 man show, so yes maybe it is a nicer club, but their management isnt any better. Secondly, about their nights. Avalon Thursdays were NEVER trance. From 1992 to 2000 Avalon Thursdays were international. That means money, european kids, and eurohouse/eurotrance music, I should know I spun some of those nights, and it was the longest running night in Boston history. The resident to this day is still one of my best friends and they treated him terribly so we both left and vowed never to return. NOw my friend has moved on to produce 15 tracks with Jan Johnston and 3 with Oakenfold so I guess he isnt doing to bad. Ever since those thursday parties died Avalon has been trying to rethink what to do so they bring in random djs on random nights thinking it will help the club numbers when in relaity they lose money every time they bring a big dj in on thursdays. Thats why they only do it for Oaky or PVD. Fridays nights are the official guest dj nights. Avaland has been going on for about 4-5 years now with the 50th show being Junior Vasquez back in 1999. Fridays are always jammed packed, but instead of asians like at exit, you have e'd out mass. high school kids dressed in played out pvc skirts and guys with spikey hair from 1998 and girbaud jeans. Its like walking into the mall when I was 15. The crowd is just as bad and just as gross, but its even more packed. The Sound System in Avalon is 100x better though and the talent is usually better too, but the 2 am thing sucks. NOw on to Saturdays. Saturday nights at Avalon are not trance, but a mixture of trance/house/hard house/new york house, but not the trance we like. Its mostly very commercial stuff with alot of draperish stuff thrown in. I wont really diss this night because my 2 friends are the residents and they are both good kids. They just have a certian crowd and they stick to them. Saturdays sometimes have guest djs when the numbers are slow, but all in all saturdays stick with the residents. Hope this helps with all the info. Avalon was my 2nd home when I lived in Boston, so I got to know everything about it and stuff I probably shouldnt have, but its history now so I figured I'd let you all know as a bit of insight next time you head there.
