Smiley DJ Headphone Suggestions?

Getting headphones for Christmas and I'm trying to get a few opinions. Right now, I'm tired of wearing the Bose I have. The bass isn't quite there and the sound is just ok. I've been told a couple of times of looking into pro headphones by Seinheiser. Anyone have suggestions?

This should be posted in either the DJ Booth forum or the Production Studio forum.

If you're using them just for casual listening purposes, get a pair of Senn HD580s. Mind, they're discontinued these days but they're easily the best cans I've ever used. I use a pair of Senn HD280 Pro for my portable (CD player, that is; MP3 players are just useless with cans), which is quite good (and affordable!); keep in mind that a bass boost is absolutely necessary with the HD280s, as they actually have a totally neutral sound when playing directly from a source.

I'm not sure of the higher models, though this website is quite good for reviews of headphones: HeadRoom.

Yes, Senns HD580 are fantastic but you'll probably have to replace the cord with time as it tends to break easily. I personally have Beyerdynamic DT990 Pro and am very satisfied with them. Both of these cans do take a great benefit from being amplified properly, so you should also buy a headphone amp or plug them to a decent hi-fi amp.

If you don't want to spend extra money on amp, you should check Senn HD595. They are comfortable, sound good, maybe not as good as HD580, but they have lower impedance, so you can plug them directly to the soundcard.

That aside, you should start from telling your listening preference and the profile of headphones you're looking for.

Depends on what his purpose is, i.e. if he is using them for mixing, or more casual listening.

Don't get the senn hd595's, the hd555's can be modded very easily to produce a similar sound. And even if you don't mod them they sound quite respectable.

If you want heavy bass and noise cancellation, the hd 25 II's are pretty good as well.

I use them for both, and they work perfectly IMO. And you can't really beat the price tag on them.
