Well, it wasn't so much the fact that other countries are on par with the US in life expectancy, infant mortality, etc. - it was just the enormity of the shift. Especially in SE Asia and the Middle East - since the 1960's there's been a truly phenomenal positive change that isn't really captured in the theoretical literature on development.
