Working with .Midi files on Ableton...

Recently, I been recieving .midi files from bands. However, they're the complete song. Is there a way to break up the midi files by instrument?

Currently what I do is place the Midi file on a clip, than simply delete notes from the Piano roll. This can become very unconvinient since I might delete a part of what I need.

Most of the time I just need the keyboardist and not the drummer or any other instrument.

Not ringtones. They were sent to me by a producer friend of mine. He sent me the MIDI files to the entire album.

Try this!
http://www.codeplex.com/midifilesplitter
Also maybe learn about midi files 0 and 1!

or
Try "SMF Tools" or "SMF Type Conversion" (or variations of that) in Google or Yahoo and you will likely find links to both free and commercial software that can convert the files for you.

I'll look those up, but I noticed they're PC and I'm on a Mac.

Anyway, this is what the files look like when I drag them into a clip.

I get those too from time to time, even though they are suppose to be separated, what i do is to open them in a different sequencer and then export them again. If you dont have a other program get a friend online to do it for you.

The answer is that you shouldn't "drag" them into a clip but rather import them over the menu. As dragging means that you want everything in one single channel. Importing will create a channel for every instrument and put the according notes into it.

make sure they are multi-track midi's. Did the person who gave you this source know much about dance music?
