Has anybody here upgraded from a TI1 to a TI2? If so, how substantial or noticeable is the extra processing power? Anything you like less about the TI2?

The reason I'm asking is that I'm finding my Polar's 37-key keyboard to be a little too small to use as a controller, particularly with all the keyswitching that I seem to be using with EWQL, Kontakt, etc., so I'm considering selling it and replacing it with the 61-key version. I'm leaning heavily toward a second-hand TI1, but may consider a TI2 if anyone thinks it's worth it - plus, there is an advantage to having that factory warranty.

And, yes, I'm very aware that the OS's are the same.

id get a TI2, its not hard to max out the TI1 with 6-7 midi channels for the kind of patches i make anyway. with mega supersaws and pads probably less.

I believe the TI2 Desktop can't be rack mounted. Or in the least, it does not come with the rack moutn hardware and I've never seen the hardware for sale.

If you need extra "power", you're probably better off getting a 2nd original TI desktop. Or better yet, a completely new instrument to use when the TI starts crapping out. If you consider that the TI2 Desktop goes for $400 more than the original TI desktop, you're paying $400 for 25% more "power". You can 100% more "power" for $1,200.

Thanks, but I don't think you read my OP because nothing here is on-point. First, your suggestions totally defeat the purpose of wanting the 61-key version - I don't want the rackmount or a second Virus - I want the 61-key version because I want the same synth and keyboard action that I have now, but with more keys to make it more playable. Second, I've had my Polar for years and owned many other Viruses prior to that and I had no major issues with any of them - so, crapping out is not something I'm concerned about. Third, I don't "need" extra power - I'm just curious to know how noticable the extra power is, preferably from people who have owned both, to help me decide whether I should get a 61-key TI1 or TI2. Fourth, getting rid of the Virus and replacing it with another instrument is not an option - I have too many projects on my hard drive that use the Virus and, besides, I like my Virus a lot (look at my avatar).

Your hatred of the Virus TI is well-known, but it doesn't extend to everyone else.

I know a guy who has both and the extra power of the Ti2 is in reality about 10-15% in his opinion, or one extra channel of sound assuming you get about 6-7 usable ones in the Ti

In the least, you can gather from my post that the TI2 isn't worth the effort. The interface hasn't even been reorganized -- it just got a new face plate. If I were you I'd use the TI2 for the only thing it's been good at so far... driving down the price of the original TI.

have you considered just getting a good 88 keyu midi hammer action controller ? I find synths always have awful controllers and why risk damaging the synth keyboard which is generally fragile when you can get a midi controller you can easily replace if you happen to spill something on it.

And if you have the cash, why not go for TI2. Music is always a luxury purchase and you should treat yourself. I've always prefered rack versions as you can then have 1 controller for all the synths but i'm sure you have already considered this.

Very good points and both weigh heavily in favor of the TI1, which is what I'm still leaning toward. I'm sure I can sell my Polar for the same price as the TI1 keyboard version, or maybe even find someone looking for an even trade.

I actually agree. If I was considering the TI2 in the rackmount version, I'd definitely go with the whiteout.

I already have one of those as well - it's my Alesis QS8.2. Some people hate the action on the QS, but I've tried dozens of other weighted-key controllers and I keep coming back to this one primarily for the action (i.e., the sounds aren't that spectacular, other than a few pianos/EPs). But, I use the Alesis and the Virus for different purposes and I like having one weighted and one semi-weighted controller/synth.
