Quick question about connecting speakers to a DJM400 Mixer

Right, Im going to get my first DJ set in a couple of days, a basic CDJ-400x2 / DJM-400, Ive never used a CDJ before nor worked with a DJ setup so its all new to me, my question is, is it possible to work with 5.1 speakers are they connectable to the mixer?

red and white cables from your "master out" into your 5.1 setup should work, but frankly a 5.1 is useless in a dj setup. i would run it as a 2.1 for proper stereo sound. or just get some dj monitors or proper speakers.

Yes indeed, im only a novice bedroom DJ, so I suppose a 5.1 can suffice for now right? I mean usually clubs have their own speakers and monitors.

yes your 5.1 will be fine but keep in mind the rear speakers are going to mess up your monitoring. music is not done in 5.1 so your receiver will attempt to create a 5.1 sound. what i would do... run the setup in 2.1, 2 speakers in front, 1 on each side of the dj setup, and the sub for added bass.

If its comfortable for you, try learning mixing on headphones as well.

It's all about what works for you though.

Drunk 5.1

5.1 usually needs a dts or Dolby digital source like a DVD or blu-ray.

There are pioneer dvj's which can output Dolby digital via coax but regular cdj cannot.

However, 5.1 systems usually have dsp modes such as 5 channel stereo to output the sound properly out of all the speakers when using a non Dolby digital mixer like yours.

not quite true. Some tracks are starting to trickle in in 5.1, and there are even certain clubs in berlin that specialize in surround sound parties.

That being said they use a lot of expensive gear that is out of the budget for most bedroom guys, and there really is not that much out yet. I agree with all of your post, i am only commenting on the fact that 0 music is made in 5.1 is false.

Florian Meindl for instance is churning out a few.
