Lucky bastard, I still am doing the top 40 shit, so tired of "Party in the USA" and Lady Gaga, Black eyed peas.... its all souless shite music.
And the people that like that usually ask me to play sandstorm or every time we touch (sometimes even basshunter)!

I actually don't mind it that much in a party situation, its just i hate playing it 95% of time.

Dude, just go with house (be careful to drop tracks people other than you will like... I like to drop prog house thats focused on the rhtym more than melody, with lots of funky drum / pad work that makes you want to move your feet). and top 40 / top 40 house remixes, everyone at a club can get down to that. I hate cheesey vocal house, and can't stand anything labled "house" on Beatport, and alot of the clubbing audience is the same. It just sounds way to much like elevator music for some people, cant go wrong with prog (no offense to normal house I just really can't stand it at all).

Gradually build up your set but don't necessarily drop the energy from the previous dj when you go on (if there was any) If you are going on that long you will probobly want to work it down a bit a few times so people can go buy drinks etc (clubs love that).

Remember, quality no quantity for spinning tracks. Its really easy just play choon after another, but keep in mind that usually dj set includes some kind of structure.

What sets my mind at ease when i play out is going through my songs and putting them into a playlist (don't know what you're using i use TSP)..

If i know i'm playing for 5 hours i'll cover myself with enough tracks.

Personally i become quite flustered when i'm in my 4th/5th hour and i'm struggling to find tracks that would suit. I should be comfortable at that stage and enjoying myself. A playlist has allowed me to do this in the past. Just means you're not spending half your time looking for tracks as you've done most of that work before hand.

Obviously you can change it up when you're there on the night and you'll be able to judge what the crowd is enjoying and what they're not really into.

If they're enjoying the top 40 stuff, i'd play more of it. End of the day if they've come to the venue to hear some top 40, give that to them. Don't have the punters going home saying it was good but he (you) kept playing songs I didn't know...

Just remember to pace yourself and keep the big tunes until after midnight. Think of it like sex - you want to tease em' and have them begging for more rather than blowing it all early on. When making the switch from top 40 to something more underground, pay close attention to how your set builds and how each track works against or with the one currently playing and the feeling your going for. Try to think where you want the crowd to be 30 min from the present, and then decide what tracks will bring you there. People "in the scene" will be much more picky with the overall flow of your set, but this allows you to tell more of a story as well. It also allows you to be more adventurous too since they're there to hear what you think is amazing - and not just Lady Gaga. Bring out those obscure tracks that you know rock, and work em in! Just make sure to balance those with the classics to keep the dancefloor solid and you should have everyone in the palm of your hands.

EDIT: Oh and be sure to keep several "sure things" handy that you know will rip up the dancefloor no matter what. A popular vocal house classic (pretty much anything from Guetta) or a good ol' rock n roll mashup can save pretty much any room in case it starts to struggle!
