The man wearing the 49ers jacket took a long drag of his cigarette and shook his head early Sunday, challenging Councillor Georgio Mammoliti’s version of life inside VC’s Bar and Grill in North York.
Yeah, there’s a fight here or there, like anywhere, he said, after overhearing some of the of the complaints Mammoliti had about the bar and grill.
Drugs? Not any more than anywhere else in the city, said the man, who didn’t want to give his name.
Gangs? There are no gangs inside the small bar and grill at the Jane St.-Sheppard Ave. strip mall, he said.
It’s a neighbourhood bar where people come to have fun, the man said.
Inside, no one was eating. People were having a drink and a few couples danced.
Mammoliti wasn’t impressed with the man’s explanations as a team of inspectors including Toronto police and fire, Ontario Alcohol and Gaming and city health and licencing offices searched VC’s.
It was one of 22 bars that were spot-checked early Sunday in the city’s west end, including Etobicoke, west North York and west Toronto.
Mammoliti, who has made efforts to fight crime a cornerstone of his bid to become mayor in next October’s municipal election, said various city departments came together for the unprecedented compliance check in one night.
“If we can continue doing that and perhaps expand it to the rest of the city it would be a great thing of the city,” he said.
Mammoliti went along with the team as they inspected three bars in his ward.
VC’s Bar is one of five bars in Ward 7 that Mammoliti wants shut down. He said there have been complaints about the premises and that the restaurant is operating like a night club, which isn’t covered under its licence.
“For what?” VC’s owner Reno Panucci, 66, said when asked about Mammoliti’s intentions. “Because he’s koo-koo in the head? Because he wants a big name?
“What trouble?” Panucci asked.
The barkeep said he feels he’s being picked on by the councillor.
“For what? I don’t do anything wrong,” Panucci said.
“Nobody wants him,” he said.
The searchers found nothing amiss at VC’s, a bar and grill that Panucci has owned for about 15 years.
The operator of a nearby fast food restaurant, who came out to see what the police presence was about, noted that the bar wasn’t his concern. It was the crack users who hang out to beg money and then try to sneak into the bathroom to smoke.
Another restaurant checked Sunday morning was Cane Grove on Finch Ave. near Weston Rd.
A search by authorities resulted in the demand to lower the volume of the music. |
