I got me a UAD card today and the included plugs were just about OK until I stumbled across the Pultec emulation.
I had the idea of throwing it on the master channel and it's like a magic loudness button. I don't mean in the slammed sense either. The entire mix seemed to have more top, bottom and width.
When they designed the Pultec plugin, they attempted to emulate the original Pultec's nack for simply making the mix sound better even with all the values at 0. I don't know what this means, but maybe you're hearing that. I don't do it because I've never been able to hear a difference.

The increase in loudness is because of the emulation of the harmonic distortion the original unit delivers. Also, the slightly compressed feel is because of the original character of the tubes :-)
If less is more think about how much more more would be.

Wish I'd be able to afford an UAD...
But first there's some other stuff on my to-buy list.
Cheaper alternative to the UAD Pultec would be the EQP-1A from IK Multimedia which is part of T-Racks 3. I would say it's in the same league as the UAD one. Some say it sounds even better!
do you have the SSL channel strip? I don't know how good the UAD one is but the Waves one is I-N-S-A-N-E in my opinion. I don't have it anymore but man I do miss it. Wish I could find something comparable to it. I need a good warming channel strip.
The Vcomp from Waves really does blow my mind. (Neve compressor emulator) I've never heard another compressor do what it does. It almost feels like it belongs in its own category.

Something comparable to the SSL Channel strip? URS Channel Strip Pro
Best thing I've used in AWHILE and light on the cpu.
