Not sure if this is the correct forum, but I saw a similar post so I thought I'd go for it.
I've been working on this song for a couple weeks and just can't seem to get the sound I want. I think it is the structure that I can't get right. My build-ups and releases seem very weak. I'm starting to think that I'm overcomplicating it. But if you don't care to, take a listen, try to listen to the whole song if you can. I admit it isn't near professional, but I think that it has potential otherwise I would have dropped it. Anyways, here's the link...should be the first song.

Drums are very static. no groove or shuffle.
Very plain. Just drums, one bass line and one melody line, there needs to be a lot more to generate interest. Need much more in the way of effects and/or sequence elements.
The parts do not build on each other. No sense of structure at all. No establishment of a theme and variation or recapitulation of the theme. Its like you just threw everything into the one track. Ask yourself, what statement is this track trying to make?

Long segments where there is no bass line.

Keep working at it, but you've got a fair bit to go.

Well, that just makes me want to throw away the track altogether. Thanks for being honest though.

Yeah, I'm definitely trashing it.
There just isn't anything good about it worth keeping.

If you cant finish the track within a week, trash it. Most of the songs I make, musically/structurally, take about an hour or two. The rest of the tweaking comes later.

Wait...why should you have to trash a song if you can't finish it within a week?

Some artists just have a different work flow than others. Even some big names take a long time on their tracks, some don't. It comes down to the individual.

Oh and to RAV:
If it's the first song on your profile. I dig the feel, just work on building it up more. You'll get it. Just keep at it! Cheers man!

Hell yes!

Fedde Legrande says he can take many many weeks fussing over every detail, and that he's a perfectionist.

In film the reason someone like Ridley Scott puts such awesome images on screen is he takes detail very very seriously.

Chopin is celebrated today as every note was thought through and placed.

The worlds best chefs are ALL about an ability to think through the tiny details more than the rest, otherwise anyone more or less could be great.

I see no reason why music is different, unless we are satying some people are just born genious' but I dont buy that. Jean Michelle Jarre was a genious but he was also a master of detail and precision.

I think what is meant by that statement is that it shouldn't take a week to get your ideas down for one track. If you can't come up with a melody for a track in a week it might be a good idea to start over.

However, fine tuning and tweaking things and arranging can take a while.

I still don't really agree. You shouldn't limit yourself.

I started working on a track back in August...forgot about it and came back to it in Oct...ended up being one of the best things i ever wrote.

Just saying, why limit yourself to time restrictions or whatever?

At least save your project and come back to it later on.

Thanks for the encouragement, but I think I'll just start over with some new ideas. Still new to making tracks, I guess I have a lot to learn. It will take time.

Yup, I have about 300-400 unfinished projects over the years. There are some from this year, last year, and even 6 years ago that I know one day I will work on again. It's always nice coming back to an old track with fresh ears, it always sounds so fresh and new even though you made it.
