joined here a while ago and unfortunately havent spent as much time here as I'd like. According to my wife the current house renovations (which started 6 months ago) take priority over twiddling knobs and faders. Women.

Anyway, I have a jp8000 and have tweeked a fairly good trance lead sound. You know that typical detuned supersaw used on a billion songs, often arpegiated. Im very happy with it but was wondering if anyone knew of a step by step tutorial (written or video) on the net which shows how to make this sound on this keyboard. The reason I ask is because I want to know if im performing the tweeks in the same order.

well, any help would be greatly appreciated.

hey mate, ive got a jp8080 which i understand is mostly the same as your synth, so I could maybe help. However I dont get your question?

Are you saying you can make the sound easy enough but want to do it in the correct order? Well it doesnt matter what order you do the tweeks as long as the end sound is what you want! Or are you saying you randomly twisted all the knobs and sliders and eventually through trial and error got the right sound and want a tutorial on how to do it without the trial and error?

1. square wave
2. mix in white noise @ maximum
3. turn down cutoff maximum
4. filter enveloppe maximum
5. resonnance maximum
6. mix in another square wave 1 semitone apart
7. put as much distortion as possible
8. phasers

thanks for the reply, you got it spot on, yes, it was a big trial and error process for me, so I thought if I watched or read a tut on it I may learn a fair bit.

cool thanks, im assuming that in order to "mix in another square wave" your synth needs to have more than one osc to generate this?

I'm pretty sure gr8ape was joking - the steps he proposed wouldn't create a great lead sound. Think about it - using two square waves to create a "Supersaw", when the JP80x0 has Supersaw as one of the oscillator options?

okay i dont know how different it is for the 8000 however first select a patch and hit edit > INT/UTIL > WRITE to set the current patch to the default simple saw sound.

Set osc 1 to SUPERSAW and play with osc control 1 and 2 which will increase the number of saws and detune them which is the trance sound you where after. Also turn up the amp evenlope R slider to make the notes play on longer and also add a slight bit of vibrato by turning up the modulation very slightly. Move the Cutoff Freq up and down to filter the sound in and out which you will have also heard alot.

Once you done that do some reading even on soft synth tutorials because I dont think theres a huge selection of tutorials out there specifically for the jp8000.

Maclean, thanks mate, gonna try that method. When I first attempted to do this sound I tweeked an already existing patch in the synth which shared a similar characteristic.

I now know what was limiting me, it was the fact that I was trying to build this sound from an existing patch instead of the init patch.
So in a sense, I was trying to build a sound as well as remove components from that patch which I didnt want, what a ballbreaker that was! Building the sound from the init patch was a hell of a lot easier.
All the steps you mentioned (except the vibrato) I had already done on my first attempt so I was on the right track! It was the fact that I was applying these steps to an already existing sound that was throwing me off as the results werent spot on. I did btw attempt to get the vibrato happening but couldnt get it the way I wanted, I just gotta experiment more with that.

Im thinking about maybe doing a quick vid of this to put up so others can learn too, or am I the only dickhead out there that didnt know this stuff!?

Glad you figured it out!

I simply cant make sounds on synths at all unless I set it to an INIT patch makes things so much more organized and I know exactly whats going on. So im the same as you on that.

To get the vibrato right you have to play with lfo1 or 2 (at work cant remember witch) speed, once you get it right and apply it gently it just gives it a slight bit of movement which sorta loosens the sound nicely.

I don't know about the JP 8000 , but on most synths ,

its basically just 8 detuned sawtooths (Or more if you want).

And add some reverb and EQ it , and you get the cheese.
