Playing trance "LIVE!"

I was talking with my mate, and we came to the conclusion, that DJ culture killed a lot of potential in electronic dance.

Why ? Because its cheaper to hire a DJ than pay someone to play live. Not to mention you probably need more than one person to perform on drum machines, synths, sing and what not.

So would it be a good idea, to actually form a trance band with 2 other dudes and try to play out live ? I know there are some trance live acts etc. but what about something major ? With a full on singer etc.

Just an idea .. : ) but if anyone from UK, London / Bham area wants to try, I'm up for that

A.) EDM got to where it's at because of "DJ culture". Do you know what went on in the 80's and early 90's?

B.) Underworld, The Chemical Brothers, Hybrid, The Prodigy, Orbital, The Orb, Rabbit in the Moon, Kraftwerk, Rank 1, Nu NRG, etc.

because studio production allows for a better result than a live performance.

Any rock band can play recordings of their songs & effectively have a DJ set, but a live performance is all the more spectacle.

Granted, if it's a single artist & not a group, then a DJ set holds roughly the same amount of showmanship as an individual performance (there are exceptions, such as Michael Jackson singing & dancing).

the point is that it's not a spectacle or concert. it's party music. people are entertained by eachother.

playing live is really fun & can sound great. go ahead and form a band.

your conclusion is total bullshit though. I've spent most of my musical career playing live & it's really fun but DJs are much better suited to club environments than bands.

Even these old guys still play live sometimes ,but it's more house than trance of course. People seem to like it a lot.

i'm not an expert by any means, but big name djs and guys who do live PA's charge similar prices.

Today a live PA is pretty much just a guy throwing pre made loops into ableton anyways. A Dj set of your own stuff does not make it live.
