First Gig......a big one

ok....i would like to introduce myself to all the TAs, i am beatnik and i have been reading the forums for 3-4 months and many topics have been of help in my djing endeavours. i would like to thank everyone for creating such an informative board.
....anyways getting to the point.....my first gig (actual clubs/events) is coming up on september 1st. in Chicago. it is a party called MASSIVE thrown by AnotherLevel. AnotherLevel is known to throw huge parties around chicago, most pull in 3000+ and dj line-ups are fairly big. this event's headliners are ATB, Richard Humpty Vission, and Hitiras....so it is a attraction. as far as the rest of the line-up, there are 26 djs and 4 rooms (3 mainrooms) and i am the only new dj, so it will be a big test. i will be 3rd to spin with an hour time-slot in the Richard Humpty Vission room. my style is a mix of uplifting/vocal trance (ferry) and pvd style trance with some prog house for good measure. ok now the questions.....

...i have been spinnin for 10 months...played out 2x (house parties)

1. should i fit as many tracks into the set as possible? (quick mixes)
2. should i just bang the shit out of them? (chicago likes it hard)
3. format: this is how i think i should progress....................
.........prog house(sander)/tek-house(marco v)/tek-trance(flight 643/
hard uplifting trance (nu-nrg)
4. should i bring my own needles?/slipmats? (headphones? yes, duh)
5. how should i transition from the previous dj....cut out, pause?

i'm sure i'll come up with more, but any info on anything not regarding my questions is great too.

thanks
beatnik

#1 no, read the crowd. if they're having a good time dancing, throw down some relentless beats. go up and down with a mixture of danceable tracks, grooving tracks, and get-crazy tracks

#2 see #1

#3 see #1

#4 bring your own needles just in case. i spun at a rave where the previous dj, a scratch dj, destroyed the needle. some djs don't like you using their needles as well. slipmats you don't have to worry about.

#5 the previous dj will properly turn down without stopping the decks. unless you have transition records, I would just power down.

#4 I wouldn't carry my needles... neither slipmats. But you MUST bring your own headphones...

#5 I usually turn it off (it makes a good effect also) and then start my set.

I would mix into the DJs set, if he plays the same style of music as you do, or at least the same BPM range.

obviously if he is playing 10 or 20 bpm away from where you want to play, then you can't do that.

but, it's best to mix into the last guys set, keeps the energy going

i would take your needles along just in case
you might even want to bring your slipmats along just in case

there have been times where the previous dj has finished, grabbed his needles and slipmats and walked off...

usually though, the promoter has someone provide needles and slipmats

as for the music... go with the flow

thanks for all the help...i will definately read the crowd, but still put my style/flavour into the set. also, thanks for the compliments on getting the gig. i have about 4 demos that i made within the past 3 months and Another Level is also a record shop that i frequent once or twice a week, so i know the guys pretty well and they have let me jump on the in-house dj setup a few times to get some practice with some cd players (i only have tts). they listened to my skills and ...walla i got lucky. they needed a handful more djs and they new me so they asked if i was interested. i couldn't believe it either. you know when they asked me, i played it all cool and calm, but as soon as i left the store i was hysterical, and then i almost puked realising how many people would be there. anyways thanks to all for everything.
