ok so i bought a spanking nice tv- 40" Samsung 1080p 120hz, yay =)

but have no cable service to go with it. but i havent had any in sucha long time that i dont know whats good and whats bad. so perhaps id ask some of you that frequent the site and give me some insight about their service and the type of package, if they like it or prefer another one, pros and cons about it yadda yadda yah so on so forth. i just dont want to be stuck with a service where the signal keeps dropping, major lag, unfriendly GUI, etc.

edit: hehe oops, i came back to provide the most important part, my area bc thats how it goes by. i live in flushing queens (which i know optimum online isnt available, yet supposedly).

You do not get an option for your service in most areas. It is set up by area. If you check each provider and go on their site with zip code, you will know what is in your area. The other option is dish but some landlords do not allow.

if you can get cablevision (optimum online)...get cablevision.

i dont have to worry about landlord or anything since its a private house. id get cablevision but as i just edited my post, its not available in my area =\...i believe im limited to dish, direct tv, fios and time warner.

I used to love DirecTV when I had it before moving to the city. They have really good deals too. The only problem is when there's a big storm, but other than that, I loved it.

Don't worry about comparing the overall prices of the different providers, because they're all going to assjack you anyway for service.

If your just starting out with HD cable, go with the BARE MINIMUM package of channels you can get. Most providers will hook you up with a DVR setup for free when you get onboard with them, and chances are that you'll record so much stuff at once that you'll be constantly trying to catch up on the DVR. I'd say about 60-70% of the stuff I watch isn't live- it's a DVR recording and I can watch the program in half the time by zipping through the commercials.

The reason to avoid some of the extra channel and movie packages is that you're not going to have time to watch them anyway. A lot of these cable providers start you out by tacking on subscriptions to these music channels and other shit that you're not going to even touch. Drop them...

Basically make a list of a dozen or so channels that you must need and then find the cable provider that can offer you said channels for the cheapest price with the least bells and whistles. The biggest mistake you can get into early is signing up for one of these packages with 400 channels that you're never going to watch.

hmm good point. actually i wasnt even thinking about getting DVR, just the HD receiver and my fav channels like history, discovery, sports & of course food network lol def need hbo too, perhaps showtime to watch dexter

Use good cables also, I can only get Comcast in my area, but they have a separate box for HD. I use gold plated everything...
