This is a summary of the whole thing:
It's got suspense, high tech gadgets,
scientific concepts, and gayness.
It's not really the deepest sci-fi series out there, though it's got its fair share of staple existentialist themes and dramatic twists, all of which is oh so European, and is a wee bit more realistic than a bunch of films about epic events that took place in a galaxy far far away... despite the occasional scene that makes me uncomfortable saying that. Also, and this is the sole reason why I've been able to stomach a sci-fi series for the first time ever in my life, it isn't prophetic or anything: there's no ultimate salvation, no godlike creatures, and every single dead character that is brought back to life makes it clear that death is absolutely nothing (i.e. your beloved ancestors will not be waiting for you with a picnic basket while angels blithely pluck their harps as if peace reigned everywhere).
The really odd thing about it is that, unlike most TV series that are shot either in a major city that everyone knows, or a very small city that no one cares about, Torchwood is based in Cardiff, a national capital no one but the Welsh can find on the map. And, the reason why I'm hooked to this series, no two people come from the same place: There's the sweet local girl, the hot American captain, the womanising Cockney doctor, the geeky immigrant from Asia and, of course, the butler... and, quite surprisingly, only the cockney doctor is completely straight (now there's something not likely to happen in a TV series elsewhere in the world, I reckon). That's also a plus, in my opinion, as it gives everyone even more room for relationship dramas.
I'm sure someone else here must watch it as well!

I didn't even realise this was aired outside the UK. I watch it if I come across it on TV, but I haven't watched them all. The ones I have seen have been OK though.

lol. coming from someone from texas. just lol.
I have to laugh at how contrived the american ones are on spooks here. It's as if they're trying to portray them in the same way we seem to be portrayed there. Then again, Hugh Lawrie fooled people into thinking he was a yank, he's just that damn good.

I'm not from Texas. I just live here. I meant no offense. Just saying, I can only watch BBC America for so long before I want to watch American programming.

That makes sense... you can easily fix that listening to more BBC America though. It's probably taking you too much mental effort to translate the words into something more "natural" for you.

Actually, BBC America's english is easy to understand. It's more the "lingo" of it. The mannerisms, humor, entertainment, etc. of the UK is different from that of America. Culture would probably be a better way to describe it. Not saying it's bad, just get tired of it after a while.

I gave it a shot and was surprised by how good it was. The poms will never be able to match the production values of the yanks, but other than that I found the plot points to be refreshingly serious, even morbid in parts.
I love how well scifi has matured on the small screen. And yes, you can all thank Babylon 5 for that
