In my experience if you really want to know what your doing, learning theory and playing the piano or another instrument is pretty important. I have noticed ever since I started playing the piano you pick up alot about what sounds good together. All I do is pratice playing different classical compositions. I love classical music. The melodies are amazing. Maybe you can get away with not learning theory but I think it will be alot harder in the long run.
The way I look at it is like this..... if you are REALLY interested in learning production take the correct steps neccessary. No one can get a black belt overnight. It will take some time to learn theory and/or play an instrument but its all part of the fun. Right? The journey is whats important not the end result. Everyone wants to be able to do great things with a minimal amount of work.
Music is forever. Its not going anywhere. If music is something you REALLY want to do, then take the right steps and in the end you will be happy with the result.
