Alpha Protocol

quote:
Sega is very pleased to announce today that Obsidian's espionage RPG "Alpha Protocol" has gone gold and is headed off to manufacturing. Alpha Protocol is scheduled for release on June 1 in North America and in Europe on May 28 for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC.

Alpha Protocol unites role-playing, stealth, and action gameplay into a single experience that captures what it feels like to operate as a modern day spy. With production values on par with a blockbuster action movie, the consequences of the player's actions in the high stakes underworld of arms dealing can be explosive. Perhaps unleashing on suspected terrorists with the Pentagon's latest weaponry is the best move... or maybe just stay in the shadows and stay cryptic in your interactions. There isn't a single correct approach.

Alpha Protocol ups the stakes in the RPG genre with the integration of the innovative Dynamic Stance System (DSS), dialogue tech that allows the player to pick a ‘stance’ instead of a direct answer. Players need to think on their feet, because in Alpha Protocol a key weapon IS choice – and every decision not only shapes your relationships with in-game characters, but it changes the entire world around you.

So basically this is Burn Notice in a video game form. Ive been waiting for this one for years and its finally about to be released. I have high hopes for this, especially since...well spies are awesome!

I hope if there are "stealth missions" in there they don't ruin the game

Anyone plying this? I got it and while its not the perfect game i must say...im actually having fun playing it. I mean come on, youre a spy, when is it not fun to play as a spy.

The one big complaint i have ab out it is that sometimes the game forces you to go in guns blazing. My character is maxed out in stealth, sabotage and hand to hand with a few points in pistols just because...well sometimes you just need to shoot someone, then the game throws you a situatin where the only way out is a machine gun and lots and lots of granades...all of which i ignored in my leveling up since i prefer to take out my enemies silently without everyone knowing im there.

I worked on this game (a fact of which I am not proud). I'm not here to defend it; I agree with all these reviews.

First, a comment for the guy at Cheesecake Factory - Most devs eat in the office most days, if they do go out they tend to grab something at the food court and head back. I know the execs take long lunches, but they often use them for informal meetings as well. Most of the programmers and designers very rarely ate outside the office during the time I was on this project.

There was a ton of work put into this game. The problem is that is was a ton of undirected work, or work on things that were just stupid. The Executive Producer for the game, Chris Parker (also an owner of the company), seemed to think he was the world's greatest designer ever, and created all these absolutely shitty systems and wouldn't listen to any of the real designers or devs about things that just didn't work. And you can't exactly argue with one of the owners of the company when he doesn't want to listen. He basically took over the game and dictated exactly how everything would work (or not work, as the case may be). The other producers realized this early on and just gave up, leaving Parker to micromanage all the designers and programmers directly.

Sega also was a factor, because they kept changing the design requirements (yes they had heavy influence there), which never gave the producers and designers time to actually decide on one set of features to make and polish. The blame is still mostly Obsidian's because the execution was absolutely terrible, and it was obvious 2 years ago that this game should have been scrapped. Instead, though, they focused on adding still more features and never fixed the ones they already had. That is a recipe for tons of bugs and no polish... as is obvious.

This game was just an absolute failure of production, and it's no wonder that so many of the developers left the company, even after the 40% staff layoffs. I am still happy about some of Obsidian's other current projects, New Vegas included, because they are going pretty well. Their big unannounced project is looking great and is already much better than AP ever was, and that may end up being the game that everyone was looking for with AP.

Sega should have canceled AP instead of Aliens...

Didnt know about all that. With that in mind considering all that went on the game actually turned out really good. Like i said, save for occasionally being forced into the gns blazing approach with a stealth character the game is very fun to play. Heres hoping it does well in sales so that we might see a sequel. There are just not enough spy games around.

But making a game thats full of potential yet, doesnt quite live up to is is really what Obsidian does. Remember KOTOR2. I enjoyed it much more than the first game, yet the signs that the game could have been that much more if there was a talented designer at the top and no interference from the outside were painfully obvious.

Also that pic that i posted in the first post where the character has 400 health...im halfway trough the game (that pic is from one of the first missions you can go on) and i haven't put 1 point into endurance so im still at the measly 100 health points which is why it bothers me that sometimes you have to face a shitload of enemies where the stealth approach is difficult a best.

Oh yeah another thing...every game designer that doesnt let you save anywhere you want but instead puts checkpoints in the game need to be put to death! Slowly and painfully...

From what I see so far and from what I have read, this is shaping up to be a great game as far as This game is awful plain and simple.
Where to start? The crappy shooting and stealths mechanics.
