Tattoos - yay or nay?

So... there is this girl on my facebook who is unemployed and constantly whining about how she has no money and needs a car and wah wah wah. Anyway, so she posts up today that she is getting a tattoo and that she just paid for her son to get one, and I was thinking... what a moron. You have no money, yet you can pay for a damn tattoo?

Another friend of mine got a massive octopus tattoo on his arm (which I think looks ridiculous and apparently has no meaning or significance... it's "just cool"), and another friend of mine who also never has any money has gotten both his arms completely covered.

So... it got me thinking about it in general. People pay hundreds of dollars to get things permanently imprinted onto them, which are often meaningless or pointless. To me, its a colossal waste of money and time. The tattoos end up looking like shit as you age, the colours fade, and the meanings are usually lost or were pointless to begin with. I also think that they are unattractive and it almost symbolizes foolishness, or that they spend money poorly etc.

Obviously there is something I am missing here, because a lot of people get them and it seems like once you get one, you want a whole bunch. So I want to know, why did you get a tattoo? Are you glad you did? Do you want more? And if you don't like them, why not? Is there anyone else who thinks they are useless?

P.S. If you have a tattoo, don't get your panties in a bunch... I am not insulting you and I am admitting that I don't necessarily 'get it'.

I agree... I was in the Apple store today and the guy who rang me up at the register was probably 23 or 24, and had both his arms completely inked up from shoulder to wrist. Although it was well done and the designs were cool, I couldn't help but think about how much he was limiting his options for future employment.

Yay to tattoos, love 'em! I got my tattoos because I liked the idea of "personalizing" myself with art. My only regret is that I started with a couple small ones instead of planning out one huge piece, but w/e. Working on that now.

Yea, this is what I meant by foolish. People get tattoos in ridiculous places and they limit their employment options, or they just make themselves look low-brow/uneducated with the stupid things they get.

I knew a guy who had a grim reaper tattooed on his hand. He realized once he got older that it was preventing him from getting jobs, so he had it laser removed (another several hundred dollars), and now he has a burn imprint of the grim reaper on his hand (which look way creepier IMO).

Pretty self explanatory. It's like doodling on your binder or putting posters up on your bedroom wall.

Yea, I have a hard time understanding that myself.

I suppose you mean you want to use your own body as a canvas to express yourself beyond the physical?

Well are you actually curious? Or do you just want to judge? Because you're coming across more like the latter.

I am totally serious. I asked him once because I had noticed it and thought it looked totally creepy/weird. The stupid thing about tattoo removal is if it isn't coloured in, they wont go over the entire area... they will just do the outline of the tattoo. Obviously this creates burns that are an outline of what the tattoo was. It's pretty stupid if you ask me.

Eh. I find tattoos to be extremely unappealing on a girl, for the most part. Small tattoos, I don't mind as much.

But they have to be small. Any bigger than Stu's cock, and that's way too big for my taste.
