Do it - vista is a dog - win7 is a way better platform, and that's coming from a mac user.

I wouldn't worry too much about the plugs as compatibility crossover between the two platforms has been a big focus in win7.

I would just go on the sites of the manufacturers and check that they have stable (non-beta) drivers for the stuff you can't live without should there not be an available driver or compatibility issues.

AS for the PC, don't worry - the increases in performance on recent years has slowed considerably. Moore's Law has effectively slowed down for porcessors so I think your computer has more life in it if you ditch vista.

btw, you still coming up to LA? I never heard back from you?

On my laptop I switched to Windows 7 and it was way better. Highly recommended.

Windows 7 is fantastic. Its everything that Vista was promised to be but never delivered. We've been aggressively deploying it at work with minimal issue and even used it on some HPC nodes with great success. I still think that XP is a better choice for an HPC workstation because it has a smaller footprint, but that doesn't preclude Windows 7 as a DAW platform option.

I'm on a very similar system spec to yours but do more on the CPU (I have no UAD, no Ti, no LM but do use Pcco) and don't run into any CPU or RAM issues under XP32, so I'm pretty sure your OS has at least something to do with it.

it looks as if the virus, liquidmix & my MOTU all have Windows 7 64 bit drives (non beta) so i feel confident in the switch. As for RAM, 2 x 4 gigs (total of 8) for $225.00. That sound about right ?

Here are a few thoughts, having just gone through all this myself

#1 you can get windows vista home edition which is all you need for audio production for $99 at newegg

#2 get 64. it supports both 32 and 64bit apps and I havn't run into a problem yet. (I have a UAD card, Virus TI, Ableton, etc. too) - Just some apps don't support 64, so you gotta install the 32bit file. No biggie.

#3 You will see an improvement over Vista. Vista is Microsoft's darkest hour. Windows 7 is amazing.

Don't even mess around with Vista. Go to 7 or stick with XP if you like your operating system to function properly.

Indeed mate go for windows 7. I've only used it a few times and instantly saw a difference.
