Layering kicks

Working on layer my kicks, mostly focosing on getting a good punch and a good sub feel. Here is the result of my first concerted effort.

I really like the sound of the attack of the kick, but there doesn't seem to be much lower end. That is to say, your kick doesn't sound like it's kicking to me - which really helps the track. If I were you, I would try to find a good sample of a nice bottom end of a kick and put it in there. Again, I like the sound of the attack, so definitely try not to change that much.

That is precisely what I did.

Maybe I can try a different, more subby sample.

Nice and punchy...

Can you provide a sample without the bass...maybe just kick and loop?

Maybe thats where your losing the low end on the kick.

Watch out for phasing issues. If you want to get old school, put some sine waves at very low frequencies to give it some boom, and just cut certain parts of kicks you want to form something desirable, but WATCH the phasing. You can get a lot of cancellation with those lower frequencies. Most of the time you can't hear it, but as anal as I've become, I won't even start to EQ something until the phase problems are fixed. It sounds dumb, but in the long run when you add up every single track and sound it makes for a cleaner, more professional sound.

Mind explaining how?

How do you go about fixing the phasing issues Stephen if you add sine waves at the sub regions (ie 40-60hz)?

It is simply making each mono and cutting off the kick where you want the sub to come in?
