depends which daw, in logic, there is a loop button on the bottom that turns green when on. IN cubase , it is in the transport bar. Or you could manually move the playhead past the looped region. lol this is totally what you meant right ?

(1) Try a one hour jam session where you simply record everything you do (notes, synth and effects manipulation, everything).
(2) Try writing out a whole track using nothing but plain piano or string sounds.
(3) Instead of working on one loop over and over, just write a bunch of different loops in the same key and tempo. Move quickly, bouncing to audio, saving, and opening a new arrangement every twenty minutes or so. Then after you have about ten or twenty, spend a while listening to them to see if you can figure out a way to fit them together or elaborate on them.

There are a couple of ways to go about it. First is that you copy the pattern, delete one of the parts in that pattern and then write a new part using the same sound which fits within the loop.
Second, don't just make a pattern with one of your sounds but write out the entire melody line through to near the end of your song. That will force you to modify the loop in order to fit the melody line.
copy the loop(s) out for the whole song (about 8 minutes). then start recording the mixer-faders with a midi-controller to draw automation. let most of them start at mute.
