great show, nice guy, but to be honest there was a reason he never made it as a chef and writes instead.

Is it because he's a great writer and not a very good chef?

i wouldn't call him a great writer either.
The guy was a line cook that happened to write one book that hit it big...everything else after that is just fried pig assholes and alcoholism.
thanks for reminding me, i have to call my mother in law.

cool thing about him is that he's the first to admit all of these things. he knows it all too well
kitchen confidential was really great. his newest, medium raw, was actually halfway decent too. after watching so much of his show i have trouble reading his books new - since his writing is pretty much just stream-of-consciousness it's natural that my brain processes as being read in his voice. and that fucks my head up lol

I once read something of his and thought he was interesting. Then I saw one of his shows on TV and found him annoying. If I was a local and he showed up to do segment on my cuisine, I'd stab him repeatedly for running his over enthusiastic mouth. Every thing out of his mouth is over hyped. The best this and the best that, blah blah etc. He seems more concerned with letting us know how knowledgeable he is and how robust a description he can make. Reminds me of those Fodor travel books or ppl who write those reviews on book jackets proclaiming this is the best whatever since slice bread.
