Canadian women prefer the Internet to sex

TORONTO - Women find their laptops hotter than their libidos.

According to a new Yahoo! survey, 37% of Canadian women say if given the choice, they would pick the Internet over sex. For guys, the number is at 30%.

"We really ask these series of questions to get a sense of how critical the Internet is to people's lives and how central it is," said Heather Cabot, Yahoo! Online web editor.

"We also asked people whether they would give up chocolate or coffee. The results show that Canada is a place where people love technology and historically have been early adopters."

Certified sexuality educator Cory Silverberg said the question of choosing between sex and being online is irrelevant.


"It's ridiculous because life is never an all or nothing proposition," he said.

"It's either give up sex for a year or the Internet for a year. You can't compare sex and the Internet, although we often do. The Internet is for sex, sure, but it also means family, friends, eating, shopping and learning."

Carlyle Janson, the owner of sex shop Good for Her, said that the results are telling as to whether people are having satisfying sex lives.

"It also shows how we measure and what we expect of women's libidos," she said.

"We don't sit around being horny all the time and we need something to stimulate our desire. There are a lot of women who say they don't have a desire for sex so they'd rather have the Internet because they don't realize what they can do to stimulate their libido."

Outside an Internet cafe near Yonge and Dundas Sts. on Wednesday, there was mixed reaction.

"People are just stuck on stupid if they're going to take the Internet over sex," said Colleen Lalande, 47. "There's no other word for it but stupid. I've been with all kinds and when I'm first with this person and it's no good, it's like, 'See ya.' "

But Robert Christensten, 21, said he understands the reasoning behind men choosing the glowing screen over getting down and dirty.

"People can get sex on the Internet," he said. "On the Internet, you can lie more and it's not so up close and personal."

A couple walking down the street agreed that their personal time together wouldn't be sacrificed to the beckoning of MSN alerts or e-mails.

"I have a real-life woman here," said Matt Stoffels, 27. "I wouldn't stop ... she wouldn't even be able to go to work."

"I'm a hands-on kind of person," laughed his girlfriend, Amanda Vandervelde, 23.

Some of the other questions on the survey showed that 50% of Canadian men would give up TV for a year if they could have the Internet, 63% of men would give up booze for the Internet and 66% of women would banish chocolate for one click of the mouse.

* 18% of Canadians go online on a weekly basis via a smart phone device or other mobile device.

* 30% of Canadians say their jobs would be impossible today without the Internet.

* 33% of Canadians check their e-mail as soon as they wake up.

* 50% of Canadian men would give up TV for a year if they could have the Internet

* Managing bank accounts (56%) and paying bills (44%) are the top financial related activities conducted via the Internet on a weekly basis. Men (38%) and women (36%) both tend to believe they are the primary bill managers for their household.

* Most people change their passwords less than once a month. More than 25% never do! Men tend to change passwords more frequently than women.
