This jam happened at College St. Bar which I'd never been to before, but is the standard long, narrow room set up with the bar along the side and a small dancefloor at the back that you see at a lot of spots like Nocturne, Blondie's, the Social, etc... When I first got there I found the crowd was probably the typical College St. scene - I'm guessing because I'm an outsider here and have no idea what's the usual - and there was nary a funky breaks dancer in sight. The music was ok, but I thought the DJs, Chiclet & Ghaleon, were just going through the motions and there was nothing too special happening here. However, after awhile they finally got into the groove and the party got started.
Musically, the feel ranged from the fun - a breaks remix of Dusty Springfield's 'Son of a Preacher Man' - to downright dirty. Chiclet played a track that reminded me of my tongue trying to get a girl off who's so high nothing but a vibrator is going to do it as well as a pounding, fuck at the speed of light rendition that had me wondering 'do lesbians like to get nailed too?' Ghaleon's moment was a track that had Twisted Sister's 'I Wanna Rock' riffing over a techy breakbeat. At this point I counted three funky breaks dancers spread out and getting down including this one girl rocking the Bohemian style with a bandana who I couldn't help but key in on. However, this wasn't the time nor the place and I moved to the side to get down with Chiclet's lez friends to keep it a fun vibe and not get so pervy.
All was not good though and part of the reason I'm writing this review. Too many DJs do not know how to end a night and finish the set when they want to close the place down. Ghaleon had the honour and took the strategy of 'let's go hard as nails and drive everybody out'. This worked for most, but for a guy like me that's locked into your groove I say 'bring it on'. Of course it's 2:30 and there's less than 10 people left so I know the night is done, but do me a favour and start toning it down - music choice and volume. I'm not so dense that you have to play the second last track you did - a blistering breakbeat that had the vocal 'Go' over and over. I was personally offended and that's why I walked over to tell you that you need to hone your craft in this regard my friend.
Hence, I felt it necessary to go to the Zone and work off the angst even though I had every intention of making it an early night because I had shit to do the next day. I have no idea who was spinning, and this is also a part of the reason why I'm writing this review, but it was exactly what I needed. With no intention of dosing and losing 5 hours I just refueled with my favorite whisky and a red bull and locked into the rhythm for the next two hours and went home satisfied at 5. Whoever it was behind the decks explored a few paths - no, it wasn't all over the place as there was a flow to his programming and mixing - from funky, fun, and intense before settling on a nice uplifting groove highlighted by Cicada's 'The Things You Say'.
