Well, don't be fooled by the made in China label. The Behringer mixer are quite decent (they even use Panasonic/Technics faders, they don't bleed that fast). I wouldn't go for the DX-1000 if I was u, you don't need all that stuff. I suggest you look at the 500. You get all the basic functions. Don't expect too much from the sampler though, it isn't that high quality. I may warn you that some people say they have a little hiss coming out of the mixer when no signal runs through, but frankly that won't bother you when playing music.
I'd compare them to Gemini and Numark, they are not better or not worse. As usual in this business, you get what you pay. Sure there are way better mixers out there (Xone, own the 62 myself, awesome but bye bye money; Pioneer, Vestax, ...) but most of the time starters can't afford them (sometimes even experienced dj's can't )
I'd say the DX-500 is a good option. Otherwise you could check out Gemini PS-626 or Numark DM-200x series, they are pretty popular with starters.
And if I may give you an advice, don't get mixers with gadgets like BPM counters or indicators and stuff. They'll help at first, but keep in mind that if you are serious about dj'ing, there will be a time you'll use other people's equipment. And that equipment doesn't necessarily have the same features as yours, so if you rely too much on it, you'll have a hard time using it.

Hmmm... I'd choose the DX-500... if I didn't have alot of cash... if you have more cash, check out the Gemini UMX series... they are really good... ;-)
The DX-1000 will just take up more space, if you don't need the channels, screw it :-)
Cheers
Greg
