I'm getting a Nord 2!!!!!!! =] =] =]

I can't take it anymore. For a good 4 years now I've been wanting a Nord (well really been going back and forth between a nord & virus indigo) and I ALWAYS talk myself out of getting one.

Usually for one of these reasons:

1. It's not going to make my music any better so why do I REALLY want one?
2. I don't really have money to be blowing like that.
3. What if I get it and find myself loathing a virus instead? what if I don't like the Nord or even worse WHAT IF I find myself never using it but using softsynths all the time just outta habit?

But recently I've been thinking this:
1. I've nevered owned a piece of hardware (except for a xiosynth but I consider that pretty far from "real" hardware lol).
2. With as much time as I've spent over the years making music, don't I kind of owe it to myself?
3. I'm not exactly "blowing" money. If worse comes to worse and for some reason I don't like it, I CAN just resell it again and take a minimal lost (as long as I don't hold onto it for too long).
4. More then anything I love trance and have been dreaming about a good synth day in and day out for a verrryy longggg time.

So fvck it, I'm getting one. Because money is an issue I'm gonna get a used rack of ebay I see one up there now for $650, should I wait to see if I can get it cheaper or does that sound right for a used Nord 2 rack?
And my last question, do I need anything else to run the Nord with FL? I just have a very basic set up, PC with Core2E7400, 500gb HD, 2Gb ram, FL Studio, xiosynth, alesis monitors and the rest vsts. Does the Nord connect via standard usb to my computer?

thanks guys I've never been this excited in my life!!! Just wanna get everything in check before I order it..

The Nord units, like most MIDI synths, do not have a USB interface. USB interfaces on synths is quite a new feature, so don't expect to many synths to include them. Only Workstation synths, the LP and Virus have them AFAIK.

So you are going to need a MIDI interface of some kind (MOTU or M-Audio), and an audio interface with a free pair of stereo inputs. You do not mention your audio interface, so you'll need to ensure that it does have this. Also, when you pick out your MIDI interface, make sure you future proof by getting at least 2 in/2 out. Then you have another set of MIDI ports if you decide to add another hardware synth in the future.

You'll need a free USB port to connect the MIDI interface on your computer as well.

You'll need 2 MIDI cables and 2 male/male 1/4 inch audio cables of desired length.

Also, bear in mind that when using MIDI synths with most DAW software, there is going to be an inherent delay from the time you press a key to when you hear a sound. This is simply because its going to take a bit of time for the MIDI signal to go from your keyboard to the synth and for the synth to send the sound back to your audio interface. You may compensate for this using negative MIDI delay, but not all DAW software supports this. Also remember that even if your audio interface latency is 0, you'll still have this delay, so be prepared to compensate somehow.

Ahh man the audio interface is gonna run me another few hundred isn't it? Had no idea a sound card wasn't sufficient enough. Is there anything else I can do about that or is it basically mandatory with a Nord? thanks

I honestly can't believe that you've been around on this site for as long as you have and you still don't understand that hardware synths need audio interfaces. Its pretty basic. "Does the nord connect via standard usb to your computer"?

Try buying a decent interface first and then think about a synth. And no, a new shiny hardware synth will not fix your problems with your songs.

And try learning to spell, "nevered"? Come on, how old are you?

PS
Get a nord 2x, the 2s aren't worth it.

Its mandatory for nearly every synth. As I said, USB is a very recent invention on synths, and the type of Total Integration you get on a Virus is unique. Even most workstation synths with USB interfaces do not stream the audio over USB. The audio is still sent out the audio outputs on the units. You must have an audio interface with a free set of stereo inputs, and keep in mind that yo are now getting into the territory where the quality of the interface comes into play. Cheap interfaces will use cheap analog to digital converters, which will affect the sound quality of the synth when it gets recorded into your computer. Its not horrible, but a mid range MOTU is going to have better converters than a cheap M-Audio.

Also, don't forget a MIDI interface. You'll need one of these as well, otherwise you'll have no way to control the synth short of playing it manually.

You should consider reading up on MIDI and standard MIDI hardware synths before diving into the purchase. There are a lot of things you may want to consider.

It never ceases to amaze me how people can impulse buy expensive stuff without even knowing how the stuff works and what they need for it.

Oh well, at least it's a wicked synth. I'm looking forward to getting one in the future too.

get a virus snow, period

i promise beyond all promises you will benefit more from it.

#1 - No new audio interface is needed. It connects via USB for 3 parts. If you want to use it on more than 3 tracks at a time, you'll need the inputs, but since polyphony is limited, i wouldn't use it on more than 3 tracks personally.

Get a virus dude. Trust me. If you have a hard on for Nord sounds get Discovery Pro VST and save yourself some $$ and time.

Virus is not a Nord. And discovery isn't hardware which is likely what Robby is looking for.

FYI I have both Nord 2 and a Virus C. They've both got their pro's and cons but they're both really good to have either way. I prefer the Nord myself though.
