64 bit plug in vs. 32 bit plug in / DAW (Knowledge needed)

So what exactly are the advantages of lets say working in an all 64bit environment like Sonar, versus Ableton with some 64bit plugs?

What type of performance issues are we going to see if using 32 bit or 64 bit, or is it totally reliable on what DAW you are using? (ie. 32 bit ableton will support 64bit plug but it will only perform to 32 bit performance)

Hopefully this isn't too confusing. I know 64 bit is faster, but I don't understand when and how and the circumstances in which makes it faster.

If anyone cares to share, I'd love to know.

I'm not sure, but i.e. a 32-bit operating system can only use 3,2 gb of ram and a 64-bit can use 6,4 gb I suppose. I reckon using a 64-bit daw on a 32-bit os will have no positive effects, since the os alone can only use that 3,2 gb of ram.

32bits OS:
- doesn't run 64bit software
- maximum of 3.2GB ram

64bit OS:
- Tons of ram available if you have it, don't know the maximum exactly. Above 128GB for sure though.
- Possible incompatibility problems with software/hardware, at least a bit more likely than with a 32bit OS.
- Runs 32bit software
- Some 64bit music sequencers have incompatibility problems with 32 bit plugins.

64 bit definately isn't faster mate... Don't know where you got that.

It can use more ram than 32 bit, and can run 32 bit progs, but it'll run them slower than a real 32 bit system would.

Storyteller got most of what I was going to say otherwise.

64 bit is faster. More operations going on. I use logic 64. Not totally stable but good enough for stuff that just needs ram.

just means you have access to more memory with 64bit, with the likes of Trilian and large sample based instruments it could be handy.

for most of us who work with 2ch stereo and mostly vst or direct audio (from synths) without bouncing, compared to others who works with recorded audio (wav) and maybe up to 8ch, I dont really think we can benefit much from it yet compared to "them". when the VSTs start to come in 64bit maybe there will be some performance-win. Im running logic in 64bit now but im not sure if the instruments in logic have been "re-coded" to use 64bit-technology so I doubt that I gain anything from it. It would surprise me if they have two versions of all the included instruments so by now i think it only matters if u use large amounts of wavs in your tracks. But I dont really know alot about it, I just know that I couldnt notice any big difference.

it does speed up your overall computer and response including the DAW. Stability is one thing but it does make things snappier.

My least favorite things about working in the 64-bit environment are the fact that Reason's ReWire won't work and the bit-bridge 32-bit adapter for 32-bit plug-ins makes it a pain in the ass to save presets I tweak, myself.

Not true.

http://zone.ni.com/devzone/cda/tut/p/id/5709

Just read this and try and get your head around it. 64 bit is only faster IF you have the RAM to back it up AND you're hitting the RAM limits of a 32 bit system.

It'll DEFINATELY run 32 bit applications (including many VSTs) slower, because its running an emulated 32 bit system on 64 bit hardware.

Its just computers guys, its not that hard to understand. If you don't know what your talking about, look it up before you misinform someone.

did I not say 64 bit ? The architecture is faster than 32 bit. Yes you need more ram, and yes the difference isn't that noticeable but it is faster. The OP said 64 bit plugins as well so take the 32 bit bridge out of the equation.
