Woony - A rather chilled Dubstep mix

A rather chilled Dubstep mix by Woony

For everyone who thinks that Dubstep is just a bunch of headache-causing noise. One hour and fifteen minutes, starting with an almost instrumental hip-hop sounding track, going very ambientish/dubby in the first half hour and then going into very euphoric stuff with great, great synthlines.

The mixing isn't perfect, but I tried the best I could, since I was jumping between 70 and 140 bpm tracks all the time. The funny thing is, you don't even hear these huge bpm jumps. That's one of the cool aspect of Dubstep, you can't really hear how fast a track actually is, it sounds like "Dubstep tempo".
Sure, most Dubstep tracks are about 135 to 140, but I used loads of 70 bpm and about 100 bpm tracks for this mix.

Tracklisting:
KA - Insanity [Subway]
Substep Infrabass - The Entity [Echodub, free release]
Headhunter - Lifeform [Tempa]
FBOM - Each Day [Echodub, free release]
2562 - Dinosaur [Tectonic]
Headhunter & Gatekeeper - Jellyfish [Transistor]
Tribal - White Rain [Echodub, free release]
Nasa - Aqua [Unreleased, free release]
Joy Orbison - Wet Look [Hotflush]
Nasa - Ray Ban [Unreleased, free release]
Martyn - Friedrichstrasse [Fabric]
Caspa & Rusko - One Of The Same [Fabric, no brostep, one of the few chilled tracks they ever did and it's really, really good]
Vandera - Indian Joya [Echodub, free release]
Martyn - For Lost Relatives [Aus Music]
Coleco - Esoteric [unreleased, free release]

If you look at the tracklist, you'll notice that there are quite some free tunes. The echodub tunes are off three free compilations you can get here: http://www.echodub.co.uk/. There is some more filler stuff, but the amount of huges tunes on that three compilations is crazy, which is also why I used so many tunes from it.

I got the Nasa tunes by asking the guys on youtube: http://www.youtube.com/user/NasaBelgium (if you ask kindly, they'll probably send you a link to the tunes) and I found the coleco tune on some blog.

I like it, but around the 12 minute mark, I get some weird noises. Is that you trying to prelisten to your next track, or is that part of the track? I think it happens again at 22 minutes?

But the tracks were great. Totally awesome. Mixing wasn't that bad, but jumping from 70 to 100 was definitely noticeable, I had the same problem on my psystep mix

I liked how you progressed from chilled out, relaxing beats to some more fun, yet more lush and epic sounding tracks. Real nice work, I liked this better than your other one.

I like this set as well. Very good diving into other genres.

I agree with ziptnf... the tracks were awesome. The flow really kept my attention. Good work.

This set would have done very well as an opening set in some of the dubstep nights I've been to. Seriously, just like previously quoted, the gradual progression of tracks really kept the momentum going up until I was head-bobbing all over the apartment.

As you said, the mixing wasn't great, but still, hearing some completely new tracks was fun enough.

Yeah those at 12 and 24 were failed prelisten attempts. I really feel like a retard for doing that mistake, but I don't have any DJing equipment, so I can't tell if it's fucked while im mixing and all it takes is two clicks in the wrong order and there's some unwanted blend-in.

But I think it's cool that some people like this
This melodic, euphoric Dubstep stuff can be so great, but there isn't much of it because most of the time it's either straight hardcore Brostep or this really dubby, Techno influenced rather minimal stuff. There isn't too much in between right now, which is rather sad.

I'll give this a listen, but the rather heavy use of Echodub material is a bit predictable.

I thought that, too but those tunes just fitted perfectly in the whole thing. Also, I wanted fun tunes in this mix and I could've chosen tons of rather filler-ish tunes but those simple wouldn't have been as cool or unique.

Good tracks, decent flow, terrible mixing. Mostly just cross-fades and some of the transitions didn't seem to have any gameplan at all. Half-tempo tracks will still mix fine, so that's no real excuse. The music was good - that Caspa & Rusko track was actually the best thing in the whole set - but it didn't feel like a huge amount of effort went into the tracklist either. It plays like a lot of Echodub stuff (which everyone on this forum is hammering) mixed in with obvious names like 2562, Martyn and Joy Orbison.

Basically put, this whole set sounds very hurried. Spend more time working on the next one.

Thanks for the honest feedback J. If im making another one in recent Time i'll spend some more time doing some practice mixes and thinking about it.

While the tracklisting isn't too obscure I spend some time thinking about it and this set was made to give people who don't now melodic Dubstep some insight on it.

The fact that the range of Artists that make really melodic Dubstep is rather limited didn't help neither did the fact that I'm too broke to effort any of the 130 tracks in my hold bin

Mixes tend to be easier if you have more tracks to choose from. If you only buy 15 tracks and you intend to use them all, you're going to struggle to make them work together. If you buy 30, you won't be forcing tracks to fit together. It really is worth spending the extra time crate digging for great tracks.

I have enough tracks, but really melodic material, like I did use in this mix is pretty rare.

Not really, man. Since December I've been shopping for Dubstep regularly. While there isn't as much good material as there often is in other genres, I still find that there is quite a healthy amount, especially when you consider stuff that's already come out in the past (nothing wrong with playing tracks from 2-3 years ago). The fact that you have relied so heavily on those free label giveaways to compile this mix doesn't exactly lend itself to the fact that you did any extensive digging prior to this.
