Review: Electric Zoo Festival - NYC - Sept 4 & 5, 2010

It was too much fun, and to hear the quality of music played during two straight days was just unreal. Let me get back to Montreal first so I can upload some videos and pictures. I just have to say the Sunday School Grove was my favourite tent in both days. One more thing, the Piknic Electronik should share some intel with the Zoo people, fake grass in the tents would be a life saver with all the dust, my lungs are still hurting, and so my feet, actually my whole body is still aching.

Favourite DJ in day 1 was Richie Hawtin and in day 2 were Marco Carola, Victor Calderone and John Digweed. Too bad Paul Kalkbrenner played too early on Saturday, by the time I arrived he was already done, and really enjoyed Claude VonStoke even if it was while I pushed myself thru the gates.

Didn't have the chances to see Moby, but everyone was surprised by his great set, and I still don't know why they booked ATB to this festival, I could had played the CD in my living room and the bonus would had been I wouldn't had stopped the music or talked.

I'm still digging dust out of my ears, ugh. Kalkbrenner was excellent. It's a shame you didn't go earlier. I got there at noon on Saturday and 1pm on Sunday. They had some real gems playing early on. Tom Middleton on the Saturday and Jon Hopkins on the Sunday in particular were both great ways to get into a good groove. Moby was good but I was expecting more big room techno, his set was closer to electro/fidget house kind of stuff. By that point the sheer quantity of different kinds of EDM had totally ruined my attention span, after 45 minutes I was pretty much like "Yea, ok, I've got it. Moving on."

Flying Lotus, Chemical Brothers, Richie Hawtin, Jon Hopkins and Aeroplane were my highlights. They weren't the only excellent sets I caught but they're the ones who managed to stick out most for me.

Festival promoters here could learn a thing or two from these guys. They managed to adjust their festival so that all of the problems of day one (ridiculously inefficient, unorganized "line-up" to get in, 20 minute waits for the porto-poties and crazy line-ups for food/drinks) were completely non-existant on day two. I was impressed.

Thanks for the reviews guys. I KNEW I should have hit this. Had checked out the US weather service forecast and was brilliant. But, it just was not in the cards for me this yr for a number of reasons. Hopefully next yr! I know that Sunday School was the place to be, and if it was anything like the one I hit at wmc this yr (SSFD), the vibe was for sure amazing.

by the way, not if the organizers resolved the problems, or was it because there were less people on Sunday and there was no longer tickets scanning to get your bracelet? that speed up the process, and can't believe no street vendor got the idea of selling bandanas or surgical masks outside the park
