Fixing Technics 1210's/1200's yourself

On one of my 1200's the sound is only coming through one channel. I've been told best to leave it to a pro, but if it is a case of faulty phono lead is this not fixable myself?

I'm was a technics qualified service engineer in a previous life.

It's going to be one of two things:

1, the phono leads are broken (either at the point of solder, in the cable themselves or at the phonos)

2, the tonearm cables have developed a fault

for (1), it's an easy fix and any one of the "how to remove your ground wire" videos will show you all you need to do to get in there. There may even be a video on how to replace with better cables (as all pre MK5G cables were a bit shit).

for (2) It's not that difficult, but it's also not that easy.

The only really tricky bit is the 5 solders that connect the conductors from the tone arm to the PCB at the base of the tonearm assembly.

Do not attempt this if you are crap at soldering or do not have a small point and decent soldering iron.

For both of these, you're really going to have to factor in about 30 mins just to remove the screw and get the casing out of the way.

But before you do any of this make sure you have fully problem solved first to make the deck is really at fault and something else.

To do this, plug the deck in to a known working channel on your mixer as see if the fault is still there.

Next make sure your decks are calibrated proplerly (tonearm wieght, tonearm height, angle, anti skid etc.).

next, swap needles on the decks and see if that changes anything.

Finally when you know problem deck has no possible needle or mixer issues that could cause the problem (i.e all of the above is in order),

try waglleing the cables about, both at point of phono and where they come out of the deck underneath.

Do this GENTLY (don't rip the phonos off your mixer etc,) - you're just trying to check if there's a short connection to id the problem faster.

Let me know if you need any more help
