What am I doing wrong with the EQ/Compression? (it sounds sort of okay now, doesn't it?)

I can't help but feel that there is something wrong with the compression and the equalisation of every single track I produce, and reviewers all agree: you can barely hear the bass drum, and I've been told that there has got to be something wrong with the compression if the tune looks like a brick in one of these players...

Just Gonna Stand There (Demo Version) by Owen Rushworth

3rd version - improved and updated!

Just Gonna Stand There (Skimmed version) by Owen Rushworth

Less fat - no compression, no equalisation, no limiter, no nothing on the master channel. I removed everything, as requested.

So, am I still doing something wrong?

Edit: Thanks for all the help thus far, guys, really!

It is pretty loud and I think I could hear some clipping in the beginning.. What have you got on the master? To me that sounds like peaks hitting the ceiling of a limiter in the master channel.

You should propably just lower all your mixer channel levels, and leave a little headroom to get rid of the clipping.

What's the attack and release set to, on the compressor?

How much bass are you rolling off/shelving?

When you're mixing, are you mixing with a limiter on your master? (It's okay to do this, just don't trip the limiter when you are. If you're tripping the limiter or clipping, the mix needs to be turned down.)

Captain Obvious: Remember, the kick is going to sound louder in relation to the rest of the music, so if you're having trouble hearing it, lower all your tracks. I'd try by about -3 to -6 db. Then bring them back up so they fit, accordingly.

I do like what you're doing with that mix, though.

I have to agree on this. I do like the "thickness" you're trying to get at, though.

I suspect the issues lay way before the choices on the master channel.

Can you post a version with all the master FX switched off?

A limiter, a compressor, and the equaliser.

Done.

Actually, I had gotten rid of the compression on the beat when I uploaded that. Just so we can work on this, I'm now adding it back with a gain of 9 db.

I don't know how to explain this... well, there's just one channel with the bass line, and a redundant synth working on the very same melody but an octave higher, just to make the bass sound fuller in the midrange).

Indeed I am. But what do you mean by tripping the limiter?

Just turned the beat up a notch.

Sure.... I'm now rendering both versions and I'm going to update the original post soon.

440ms rel time is really really long, the compressor can't compress fast enough when a sound hits. and your sounds are rather attackful. on the master channel, even in mastering, there should be a medium attack/rel, 440ms is pretty damn long. basically it seems that the compression is not allowing the sounds to come through the mix fast enough and they sort of 'drown'

the pad could use more level in the new mix, along with the vocals. they're much too soft but it's coming through much more attackful than previously

I should have been clearer. I mean do you shelve and/or roll off the bass frequencies on your kick? This is what I have the kick on my current project set to and it's still a little boomy but it's helpful.

For your tempo, try an attack time of 70 - 100ms and a release time of 150ms or less. You want the kick to have a little bit of a sustained plosive, when it begins. With your settings you're squashing the kick, immediately and then keeping it squashed, in perpetuity. The compressor should have some time to recover before the next kick hits. If it's still compressing when the next kick triggers, it will just keep restarting the 440ms.

I just mean you're tripping the threshold for the limiter to begin gain reduction. A good mix won't do that, not that what is posted below belongs to a "good" mix:

Second mix sounds much better but definitely hearing some clipping issues, possibly related to the vocals.
