Dumb semi noob question...

Okay, here's the deal.

I've been trying to develop my composition and sound making and mixing skills for about the last 5 to 6 years and frankly, I just don't see a whole lot of progress.
Partly because my day job keeps me really busy, raising a family keeps me really busy and I've basically treated writing music as a hobby.
Growing up I learned how to play guitar, I learned by emulating other people's playing, taking lessons, and classes etc.

I'm getting frustrated with trying to learn how to write electronic (Trance) music though.
I think a big part of my problem is I sit down and start throwing beats and rhythms, chords and progressions together and they really don't materialize into anything I can be enthusiastic about.

So I thought maybe I should do what I did with the guitar...emulate other people's music. Learn from other people.

So here's my question; can anyone recommend some fairly basic (not utterly basic) trance music I can listen to and pick apart?
My biggest problem is song structure, everything I string together sounds unorganized and uninspired, and basically has no flow.

I realize this is probably a really annoying noob question and I apologize for this, I was hesitant to post anything here (or anywhere else for that matter) but I'm getting depressingly frustrated. I love creating sounds and I love music and I feel like I'm stuck right now.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Alice Deejay - Better Off Alone

I don't know about you, but recreating that song helped me a lot. Maybe it's too basic though lol.

No no, not too basic at all, I didn't even think about this song, thank you for reminding me!

I need to go back to basics, I'm basically starting over from scratch.

I've been spending the last year and a half listening to and creating psy-trance tracks (mainly kick and bass lines laden with sound fx), but I'm finding that to be boring...not really my cup of tea.

This is perfect I think.

Best thing would be to start with tracks around 1999 - 2000 I think, as Trance back then was fairly simple melodic music and not that technical as it's now with all this huge sounds and layers.

Binary Finary - 1999

Universal Nation - Push

From there you should start to take steps year by year. The most enjoyable time of Trance for me was 2003 - 2006 for example. Nowadays I tend to be more into Progressive and just a very few Trance songs.
