Prosonus Studio One

Hi All,

Since it's been out for over a year now. Just wondering if anyone is using this Daw or thinking about changing to it.

Also how does it compare to there last Daw which ever that was.

Waza

i lol'ed when i saw 'prosonus'

it looks like a good program. i was looking into it but it doesn't seem to come with much synths and instruments to start off with which kinda steered me away from it.

It may not come with much for instruments but, imo the bundled effects sound top notch. I have not switched to it since I can't ever get my hands off Live, but I tried it, and liked it. For me, nothing beats Live as far as being efficient in terms of workflow.

yeah the effects seemed dope to start off with. probably an ideal program to use for mixing and mastering if you're into using different progs for different things.

My thoughts, as well as several other TA members', are summarized here.

Timely thread, though, given that the 1.6 update was just released yesterday, which addressed 1 of my 2 biggest beefs with S1. The first is the lack of track folders, which drives me nuts - countless other S1 users have been asking for this feature for months now, but PreSonus doesn't seem to be listening. The other major flaw IMO was the very limited buss routing, which was changed in the 1.6 update to now allow infinite buss routing (with the exception of feedback routing [e.g., routing the signal from buss A to buss B and buss B back to buss A]). This update also improved MIDI input by allowing "all inputs" and making it the default setting when inserting an instrument track.

It's a great and easy to use DAW with many excellent features. And, yeah it comes with a great effects bundle, but the synths/samples are pretty good as well and don't get the respect that they deserve IMO.

I'd say its biggest strength is actually as a sequencing/composing tool. It's sorta like Live from the respect that you can drag/drop instruments, effects, loops, etc. right from a browser. Also, it's got a very intuitive interface, drum sequencer, etc. That said, the built-in mastering environment, which syncs to the mixing environment, is pretty ingenious.

cryo, what're you mainly using S1 for, seeing as how you have a couple other DAWS as well?

Actually, the only 2 DAWs I have now are Sonar and Studio One. Well, that's not entirely true, I also have FLS, which I've never really used and Project5, which I haven't opened in ages - those licenses can't be sold, or they'd be gone as well. I sold Live and Cubase a few months ago, which I primarily just used for collabs anyway. Sonar is still my go-to DAW for nearly everything, just because I've used it for so long. But, I like having a change of environment on occasion to broaden my range of skills, force me to work differently, try new things, etc. That's why I like having several DAWs around. Also, as I mentioned, S1 is dead simple and quick to use, so for me, it's great for getting ideas down quickly.

I've been thinking about switching from FL for a while, Studio One seemed like a pretty good option. I haven't gotten around to it yet though, since I still don't feel limited by anything FL offers.

Does anyone have experience with both? What would be the best reason for switching?

Well, no one is saying that you should change just for the sake of changing. If your current DAW fulfills your needs and you're happy with it, there's no reason to change. But, for those who are in the market for a new DAW, Studio One is definitely worthy of consideration IMO.

I'd recommend it over Live due its equally easy-to-use workflow coupled with MUCH better audio editing capabilities and bussing, and I'd recommend it over Cubase and Sonar for those who want a more streamlined and intuitive workflow. As I said, I don't really use FLS, but based on my very limited experience with it and its specs, Studio One seems to be a step or two up in terms of features, particularly in the areas of audio editing, mastering, and support for external gear.

Ahhh, dave, I'd wish you'd come in to the light and give Logic a true shake.

Yes, it would probably financially break a small country having to buy the amount of softsynths you own all over again so that they are AU, but most people I know in your position, especially with the recording you do are logic based.

Back OT, I'm not sure if this was already listed in the other thread about the platform but AFAIK, 4 of the top guys at steinberg actually jumped ship to create this. It's kind of a wishlist of things they feltCubase was lacking.
