Drum Rolls

I've heard a couple of snare-attack-builds in the Music Producer's Promo Forum and have decided that it's time for good, old-fashion drum rolls to make a come-back.

Snare Attack by DeepEddieZilker

I am very heavily invested this creation as it is as much a part of who I am as my toe-nails, beard or hair, and will react horribly if you even veer close to criticizing it with some off-color comment like, "sounds great but far from finished", "you should start a blog", or "this isn't the forum for crappy WIP's".

They're kind of fun to make so if you're bored and want to make one, post yours, here, too. Then, trash your fellow producers for being cliche' while still criticizing their technique. Share your tips and tricks, too.

a start would be to approach it like a drummer.

I tried to do a ascii diagram but it didn't work. Will do a quick sibelius thing.

anyways, accents with crescendos, length and filter manipulation along with the more modern granular manipulation is pretty much how it is done also don't forget phasing and chorus effects.. The * indicates an accent over the quieter roll which gives the drum fill a syncopated feeling.

rather basic but once you start messing with the accents, you can get all kinds of cool sounds including going from straight notes to seemingly triplet sound as you have no doubt heard in many songs.

Dear OP, please elaborate...Are we posting a snare roll that is part of a build? (Your example does not "build" damnit!) Or just snare rolls being used kinda wherever? Are we differentiating between snare-attack-builds and snare roll build, and have I missed this differentiation in my novice ineptness?

/twat?

I have examples for both,(used wherever vs. build) and would naturally like to contribute when I get home... without being too much more of an ass-hat than I've already been

Also, I think we need to get rid of snare rolls altogether in lieu of cow-bell rolls.

A cow-bell-attack-build even, if I dare-say...

Any drum roll, anywhere in the song. It could be on the break, the build, the drop, intro, outro, et al, but it should only be a portion of a song with the build in it and preferably a song which you're not trying to shop as a WIP. And, yes, any form of percussion is acceptable. You don't just have to use snares.

it really helps to play drums. I was a session player for years from the age of 16 and can answer any question but right now it is a little too broad. Any particular song or fill and I can transcribe it for you. Haven't really played that much lately but its all still in my head.

recorded this when I was 17

Drum Solo by Brad is Mad

this one has more of a groove

Solo2 by Brad is Mad

of course i'm doing all kinds of odd times and triplets over 4/4 and going in and out of straight and triplet feel so it might seem rather disorganized but oh well.

fuuuu, cuz all of my shit is a WIP...

Going with a snippet from something I've already done :

The dry version :

Drumrollzdry by TheTA

In context :

Drumrolllz by TheTA

Dropped the velocities on the offbeat quarters (*and* one *and* two) subsequently through half the roll to give it a pumpy feel, then automated increasing volume while evening out the velocity at the same time...also added some stylish flam at the end. Nothing fancy.

With regards to stick velocities and the way the rolls sound...getting some hands-on (I've had alot of drumming experience myself) helps alot with nuance.

And I couldn't improvise a suitable cow-bell-attack-build, so I'll get on that asap.

These are awesome, guys. M4B, those are more solo than builds, but still, fine work. Love the dynamics on the first one.

TA - nice work, too. Is that an electronic snare sound I hear in there?

I'll be working on another one, tomorrow.

I used 3 layers I think...a light punchy electric snare with the meds nipped on top of a non-descript white noise sample like a shaker or similar EQ'd to flavor and a typical snare sample you'd find in FL or the likes.

It has layers, like an onion.

Oh and I await your drum roll

Eddie, I agree with you mate. Over the last few years I've wondered why they've all but disappeared. Let's bring them back!
