Kids and Music

A few on here are at that age. I've always wondered if the second you have kids, you kinda stop caring about music in terms of striving for perfection and it becomes alot less stress as you are obviously passing the torch to your smarter better looking kids. I worry that I would not have time but then I think, why would I even want to put that time in when I don't really care as much about being the absolute best I can be.

I'm not having any anytime soon but It is a concern. Not that they will cut into my work but rather they remind me of myself and as a result I just sort of neglect them.

I wouldn't say you stop caring about music, for me anyway's I just found it hard to find time to make music after the first two years my son was born. But then again its just a hobby for me, its not my profession. I do get more time these days, my biggest problem now though is the wife

With thoughts like that it might be better if you don't have kids.

My son is 3, but my interest in music was in a state of steady decline for about 10 years before he was born. I had already transitioned from music being my primary source of income to having a completely different career in aquatic sciences. I was very happy to make that transition - my career is much more secure, income is much greater, etc. So, I'm definitely in a different situation than the OP. But, I can say that I made some pretty big changes in my "real job" when my son was born.

I was a pretty serious workaholic for the first 6 or 7 years of my new career and was motivated to climb to the top of my firm as fast as possible and make a name for myself, but once my son was born, that changed quite a bit. My job takes a (very close) back seat to my family and one of my biggest struggles is maintaining that family/career balance. I've got to put food on the table and think about the future, retirement, my son's education, etc., but not work so hard that I don't have time to spend with my family and still find time for some selfish "me time" (trust me, it becomes far more important, yet much more difficult to come by than you might expect).

So, yeah, having kids will change everything - your perspectives on life, your priorities, your calendar, your bank account, your relationship with your spouse, your sleep, etc. etc. etc. I'm definitely one of those people who said, "naw that won't happen to me" (as evidenced by the fact that I waited until I was 40 to have a kid), but here I am, enjoying everything that everybody ever told me would happen. And, I don't regret one aspect of it. Playing in front of 10,000 people doesn't come close to the satisfaction I get out of watching my 3-yo drag all of his percussion toys out on the studio floor, bashing the hell out of them for a half hour, and singing "Wheels on the Bus".

Here he is when was just over a year old:

at first i bet time is a bit problematic but that will be under control after some years id imagine. lack of time (because your life will be pretty different, at least im told) always goes out on music first as it demands alot of focus, concentration and inspiration. but if you cut out alcohol, tv and friends its amazing what you can find time and energy for. i dont think its a problem, but u might find out that other things than music are more important. but if youd like to constribute anything to the world, dont reproduce your american ass. (just in case)

Funny you mention that, because we get asked that a lot - my wife has long jet black hair and I have dark brown hair. People always have this suspicious tone in their voice when they ask us where he got the blonde hair from.

But, the funny part is that I actually WAS adopted when I was about the same age (13 months) and he looks almost exactly like I did at that age, blonde hair and all.

Congrats! I can't imagine chasing more than one of them around!

I had white blonde hair till the age of 3 and then it went all sour brown. According to my parents, I was a rather ugly baby as I was like 5 months premature and looked like a reptile. Maybe it was one month. I don't like small spaces so it makes sense that I wanted out.
