Toms are disturbing

everytime i try to put toms into a melodic trance tune in order to put a bit more drive in the mid/low, i always find them to distract from the rest of the track. when the bassline is muted you often get that nice drving tribal feel (especially with a good delay) but i find it hard to blend that well with a 16th fast paced bassline. even beyond EQ ing.

how do you guys deal with that?

Maybe sidechain the bassline, high pass the toms, mix them down really low in the mix...

Also, make sure you've got the same swing on the toms that you do on your bassline yeah? Coz their taking up the same space so they need to hit at the same time.

panning

or

under my own rules that if a sound doesn't automatically almost get there in a mix before I start messing with EQ, leave it out.

Yeah, that's one of those "I'll save that for another song" moments
what i find disturbing are:
the lows (toms duhhhhh)
the tune (always out of tune somewhere)
When EQéd / high passed they loose the oommph...

I think i'll be using them as a bassline replacement in my next techno adventure.

I usually use bongos/congas instead of toms, they tend to sit in the mix better.

just really emphasize the transient of the tom so that the lower end stuff isn't so prominent.
