I got k3 and a free upgrade to k4. It was well worth it for me because I got Reaktor, battery, kontakt, absynth, massive, FM8, pro 53, vokator and spektral delay. So I had sampling, FM, VA and weird stuff well covered.
Really, for powerhouse synthesis and atmospheres and textures, as well as sampling, NI leads the game. But since they discontinued pro 53 they don't really cover VA stuff any more. They don't have what you'd call a "warm" sort of synth, or a workstation type thing that you can go to for many sounds like omnisphere.
For ready to use stuff, omnisphere is the best. Its like one of the old korg or roland workstations, but far more customisable, deep and higher quality.
So basically, its apples and oranges. NI will give you all the sampling tools you need (if not all the samples). It'll also give you a decent selection of synths of various flavours (massive, FM8, absynth) as well as Reaktor, which is a whole synthesis and sampling toolbox of its own. What NI won't cover you for is VA synths (look at arturia instead) or a good workstation synth (loook at omnisphere). I'd get komplete first because it'll give you the wider range of tools to work with in the short term, even if you'd like omnisphere in the long term.
