Idea old pc as a fx/synth/other?

Have a bunch of my older PCs sitting around with quality rme interfaces. Need some ideas how to use them with a new rig. I was thinking of using vnc or similar for control via single KVM and then run the out directly over audio.

Need some ideas for basically repurposing old hardware to pull an outboard duty in a musical network rig. Ideas, links, etc much appreciated. Thanks!

Could work well for standalone versions of synths (e.g. the Native Instruments lot), just to give your main PC a bit of backup. If you hook it up to your main PC via MIDI, you could control it all from your main DAW as if they were outboard hardware.

Could also be a good way to run 2 DAWs together: 5 years ago it was really common for people to run Cubase and Reason together to get Reason's synths and Cubase's versatility, but it meant having a pretty powerful PC... no idea if many people still do this kind of thing, but if you wanted to try it you could have a 'Cubase' PC and a 'Reason' PC (or whatever DAWs you want to use).

I can't really see much real benefit other than sharing the load, but if you're struggling with one PC it sounds like a good idea.

Get some extra screens and it would be pretty nice having loads of synths, each with a screen to themselves running on their own boxes, spanning around your studio! Like some sort of synth farm...

You'll get some good ideas about how to incorporate your legacy stuff by getting experience with your work-flow.

I'd probably use an extra PC that I could hook to the internet and have miscellaneous sound design & editing capability.
