Hot new trend: abandoning hardware

I have no statistics, but one thing I've noticed recently is that lots of people on production forums have said that they are going all software, either selling any hardware synths and effects or just letting them gather dust. As the sound of software advances, hardware may be losing its mystique, and for many it may be too much of a hassle compared to an all-in-the-box solution.

What do you think?

I'm all software but I'd love to incorporate some hardware stuff

That does seem to be the trend. I would imagine that it's related to numerous factors - convenience, cost (esp. in this economy), and the narrowing of the sound quality gap between software and hardware. I still prefer hardware for tactile control and for maintaining a resale value, but I still rely heavily on software.

I keep a photo of you next to my computer and I stop to look at it every morning just before I go to eBay.

just purchased a MOTIF XS RACK + FW16E and finally my beloved API-2500 harware unit. Horses for courses, in my studio it will remain a mix, based on sonic taste.

I'm all software but I would like to have 1 hardware synth and a proper mixing desk, nothing too big but just some faders to play with.

Rendering has spoiled me. I really do not enjoy recording audio for anything outboard, but I like my synthesizers so I suck it up.

why the ES? it's the predecessor of the XS and does not support the Yamaha FW mode with the FW16E
