Review of sorts: NYE at Berghain

I'm back from my Berlin trip and while I didn't do everything I wanted to, I did get into the Berghain. It definitely lived up to its reputation. I ended up seeing: Steffi, Adam Beyer, Chris Liebing, Jerome Syndeham, and some other Ostgut Ton residents. I know I'm missing some names, but to be honest, my memory is kind of vague at certain points.

I did the waiting in line fear experience- standing two hours in the cold, watching rejections left and right, and then was hang dog and broken once I got in front of the line. I was waved in without a problem. Whew, I was so frozen I was afraid I'd die out there.

Hand stamp. Re-entry allowed. Spent about 20 hours there over 2 days. I feel like I hallucinated the whole experience. It was so bizarre. A lot of things happened seemed like they couldn't have been real.

I loved the Panorama Bar upstairs. It was the afternoon and a guy was DJing (don't know his name, it wasn't listed) and they opened the blinds of the room & while the music swelled, the light poured in. And we could see- the litter of bottles, women's panties, detritus from costumes and drugs, etc. After days of darkness in Berlin, the sunlight was amazing to see.

Meanwhile, the Berghain was pounding hard techno with its phenomenal sound system. Even though it was the afternoon, the dance area was dark and nihilistic. Hearing Adam Beyer blew my mind. The music almost sounded sinister because it was so insistent and powerful.

Anyway, I have more stories like how I got lost and wound up in Poland, but I'll share those another time. Some of the stuff I did, I don't think I should post on the forum.

It was open 50 hours!!!!

Gimmebeatz - are you comfortable witnessing homosexual acts? Think jail gay porno!?!?

Sweetcaroline - Glad you went and had such a great experience.

It is definitely one that you need to experience first hand to fully appreciate what goes on there.

from what ive been told the gay area is primarily the basement. i mean its certainly not something id go looking for but to experience berghain just once id deal with whatever i need to....

and 50 hours is just unreal!!!! soooo fuckin sick!!!

So many questions...Let me see if I can help.

1) The LINE

There are a lot of myths about the line situation and some truths. I never saw a group get into the Berghain. It seems like it's pointless to go as a group. And pairs got rejected too. One guy alone got the no. Not sure why. I went alone and was dressed in my rattiest clothes. I had no coat b/c it was too garishly American or tourist. As for the not speaking English part, that's a myth. Nobody spoke in line. We were quiet as mice and no way to tell our nationality that way. The door men were a few feet away and pointed and waved you in or shook their heads no. No speaking at all except for them trying to discern if you are in a group or not. I had a ticket that a friend gave me, but it didn't really matter. Everybody waits in line regardless of having a ticket. And you can get turned away with a ticket- they'll refund the money.

I got in line at the worst possible time 1 am, but I didn't want to wait till 7 am. It was a newb mistake, but worth it. I got a few extra hours of music in. It took me 2 hours to get in & then had another long wait at coat check.

It was RE ENTRY!!!! That is the best thing ever. I was worried I'd sweat my hand stamp off, so I was protective of it. Total cost 24 Euros for so much music. A steal. Berlin is like that. Everything is inexpensive.

2) The SEX

Yes, there was a lot of it. Gay, straight, combos, solo, whatever. Except for me. My Berlin friend looked surprised when I told him I didn't get laid. He thought I was lying. Apparently, I was the only one in Berlin not getting any. Oh well. Maybe next time.

3) 50 hours of PARTY

There's really only one way to stay up for that long dancing. And it wasn't Red Bull & vodka. I never saw so many messed up people before. Bathrooms were a pain b/c couples would disappear inside and never return. The music is so amazing that it's easy to lose track of time there. They also had dozens of cubby holes, private spaces, and corners for people to take a sleep or a sex siesta. The club is more than just a big room- it's like an entertainment complex with three dance floors with radically different flavors.

4) Berghain isn't everything

People I knew in Berlin gave me the heads up on the other parties in town and there were tons of them. Berlin loves underground parties with secret locations, passwords, scavenger hunts for clues, riddles, etc. So, if you get turned down at the Berghain, there's plenty of other things to do.

5) Next time in Berlin

Next time, I'm going in summer.
