Hi, I asked about this on another forum but I didn't get a good answer so I'll ask here.

I'm trying to figure out how to produce a certain sound effect on instruments. A good example can be heard on the following song:

The opening bass has a metally sound to it. Also, there is a sound effect that sounds like a white noise panning left to right that seems to have the same effect applied to it.

What effect produces this noise, is it a flanger? When I use a flanger the sounds "moves" and I can't really get the sound I want. Any advice is greatly appreciated

Well reverb alone can give you a metallic sound man. i use FL studios so i usually use the reverb2. put the low cut up a little, take more of the high cut out. change the room size to the smallest then take the high damping and dec parameters and play around till you get the desired effect. This however is only one way to get a metallic sound. play around with the presets of the delays and phazers until you note a metallic sound and play around with the parameters till you know what you want. the best way to figure this stuff out (aside from someone showing you or tutorials) is to mess around.

Cool, thanks VP. I also use FL Studio. I never thought to use reverb (clearly, I'm a noob). I'll throw the reverb2 on an instrument and see what i can do. Thanks for the pointers!

take fruity delay 2, set the time to very low 0:01 - 0:10. Increase feedback volume and input volume to about 75%.. play around with the settings... one way of doing it.

WASP is a good synth to use to try to get that sound.. try a square wave and play around with the pw setting

Don't have time to listen to your clip but flangers, Resonators, Short Delays and ring modulation are all ways to create metallic sounds.

EDIT: I see you've already tried the Flanger... You can get static ones too, what's causing the moving is just an LFO attached to the delay parameter of the flanger. You can get flangers where you can disable that LFO. I think ableton has one, what DAW are you using?

there is an effect called Metalizer which does exactly that, i got it on a pack of effects, the reverb,delays etc... does the same but be careful about that because the metalic effect are indeed ~15khz sounds...

Thanks, I tried this and definitely got a metalic effect! I still can't seem to get the sound in Tyas' song though. I'll keep tweeking and see what I can do.

I'm using FL Studio. A static flanger would be great! Can you recommend one that I can use in FL?

I don't know who is the manufacturer but virtual dj has a plugin for this, i think you can use them on a DAW too.

However tell me the specific seconds of that track (one of my favourites from this last years ) and i can tell you if this effects are suitable for that or not.

The effect seems to be applied to the bassline (or maybe it's not really a bassline - Damn, I'm a noob) which starts at the 2 second mark. Also, the noise that starts at the same time - it's a stuttering air noise that pans from right to left. It starts right at the beginning of the song, after the opening noise. Maybe "metallic" isn't the proper way to describe it, but both of these instruments sound like they're playing in a metal tunnel, at least to my ears.

P.S. This is also one of my favorite tracks!
