how does it compare to the other forms?

what do ya like about it?

im taking a stab at learning it at the moment

and wanna see what type of success people have had with it on this board..as it seems likes its fairly difficult to get a grasp on.

I love how it sounds. I hate using it. And from my experience, it's very difficult to figure out how to make it do what you want.

yea its great, can yield some much more unique sounds. what i recommend is modulating one oscillator from another, and not fully if you can gradually mix it in, try about 25% and see what kind of character it can add

fm is just a synthesis form that lets me modulate oscillators with others (in full frequency) in cascade/parallel/serial mode, so it is a welcome expansion to the analog subtractive synthesis. It lets me create a lot of sounds that do not remain static when trying to create them with analogue type softsynths. I have fm8 and operator and tend to rely on both equally as I hate having to rewire live to logic when I'm composing in the latter, which now happens all the time. I don't like logic's fm synth that much, it's too conceptual and limited, although it sounds ok.

I use FM quite a bit and, in fact, one of my favorite synths is the Yamaha FS1R, which is widely regarded as the most full-featured FM synth ever created. But, it's a 1U hardware rack synth that is a huge PITA to program. I think it's a synthesis style that is much better suited for software, and synths like FM7/8 and Rob Papen's Blue are both very easy to use in comparison. Image Line's Sytrus is supposedly very nice as well, but I don't have it.

I particularly like FM for electric pianos/tines, punchy basses, plucky arps, and pads.

If you're looking for some good resources for learning FM, here is a dump from my bookmarks:
