It wouldnt surprise me if it was an insurance scam - the amount of time it would have taken to restore that building after the collapse would have been a long time.... now the owners of the building have some cash in their pocket and can move on.

I really hope salad king reopens somewhere - Ive been craving their mango chicken for half a year now.

^^ I Don't know exactly what happened before but If the building just fell apart due to age/'wear and tear' I doubt it would be insured.

The problem with historic buildings is that city officials sometimes step in and make the process much more difficult. With historic buildings they have to use like, kind and quality building materials to the original so it makes it very expensive.

Three firefighters were taken to hospital as a precautionary measure, but they were not seriously injured.

"A couple of firefighters had somehow lost their footing and ended up falling from the neighbouring property into the fire building," Strapko told CBC News.

He said rapid intervention teams were deployed and got the firefighters out safely.

Speaking later Monday morning at a news conference at the scene, Toronto fire Chief Bill Stewart told reporters that the firefighters were rescued from the building within 25 to 30 minutes.

"But as you can appreciate, it's a very horrific situation for the firefighters on scene to … locate them in the smoke, to find out where they are, and extricate them from the building," he said. "But the training that we put our people through worked, worked effectively, and you can tell by the smiles on the fellas' faces this morning. It was a good rescue."

Stewart couldn't say what caused the fire.

A fourth firefighter also required medical attention, but opted to stay and battle the blaze, Strapko said

It's not an insurance scam, the real issue is zoning.

The building is considered a Heritage building by the City of Toronto. The owners of the building, just wanted to tear the whole thing down, and build something new, but the City would not let them, because of the designation. This is why Salad King has not returned, the property sits in limbo, until now.

So not an insurance scam, but certainly a way to get around the zoning pylons that the city threw up. I definitely suspect arson.

The whole thing has been a huge mess. It is amazingly short sighted of the city, to just throw up a barrier at Young and Gould instead of dealing with the issue. Yes, let's fuck up traffic in the busiest part of town, because we cannot figure out to remove the rubble.

Salad King is supposed to open up above the Footlocker across the street. But they have to reroute some of their pipes through Footlocker, who is not being too helpful.
