Hi all,

I'm relatively new to the DJing game... have only been at it for a year but have now got to a point where I think my mixer might need upgrading.

The gear I have is

2x Denon DNHS5500 Decks (with Echo / loop, Flanger, and High / Mid and Low Filter FX) also Digital Outputs and USB hard drive.

The mixer is a Behringer DJX750.

The mixer, I keep reading everywhere, is a POS, and I wanna record mixes on my PC but I think the quality of the mixer is making my played back recordings sound pretty bad.

I've been looking at the DJM800 Pioneer or the Xone 92... I mix uplifting trance mostly (Anjunabeats stuff etc.) so don't really use FX that much.

Which mixer would you recommend given the music I mix and also bearing in mind the Denons.

ah also nearly forgot to mention - what are the specific or general differences I would see from upgrading from a DJX750 to one of these mixers?

I really have no idea what to expect as the only mixer I've ever played on is the DJX750.

Get the xone if you're not going to use effects that much (which you really, really shouldn't if you're mixing trance but since you already stated that you won't then this is moot).

Xone has better sound quality, better eqs (full-kill eqs that feel more precise). The main thing is the filters that you get on the 92. They're absolutely money and the control you have over them (lo-pass, hi-pass, mid-pass, and a dry/wet knob which you won't get at all on an 800) is mint. I had the Xone 42 and I got to the point where I would mix with the filter moreso than with the actual eqs. Though if you got the 92 you'll have 4-band eq which I never got to mess with and you won't either if you go with the 800.

Also, this has been asked a number of times, but in any case I felt like rambling.

I vote for 92, but that's because i like the fact that it's a little more simple. I own one. Never have quite like the 800 as i think it sounds a little more harsh.

But I know the 800 is probably a little bit more popular and also present in a lot more clubs. For the music I play (House Techno) i prefer playing on the 92.

Go into a shop and have a play around with both. The 800 will probably make you feel like you're getting more bang for buck, what with all the effects etc. But the 92 does sound lovely, and the filters as Ted mentioned... well i've never heard anyone complain about them.

my experience is that its easier to resell pioneer than allen&heath. therefore i would get pio. the quality is more than good enough on both so why not get the cheapest one, which also is easiest to resell? just my thought.

Absolute bargain for that price, £200 less than everywhere else.

Only problem perhaps with the djm800 is that it's replacement is out very soon, the djm900, this might make selling the 800 possibly more tricky in a year or two for example if you ever want to sell it.

I really need to road test these two together I think though, might take a trip to HTFR in Birmingham and give them a go.

The DJM900 is gonna cost about £1500-2000 I'd imagine ?

Ah thought that price was too good to be true , don't ya just hate companies who don't put the VAT on the first page to begin with?!

You'll have more fun with the effects than with the Xone filters. Specially cuz you're mixing trance. If you were a house DJ, prolly the xone, but you're not, I think the Pio is more suitable.


Also, you might be fine with the mixer you have, it might just be your recording levels or your soundcard (if you're on a PC) that are screwing up the recording. Keep all your levels GREEN!!!! That includes both input (your soundcard) and output (your mixer).

How about getting the one that best suits the buyer?

Your advice just spurred me to re-evaluate my levels...

I think the problem was that I had the gain at 12 o'clock on my mixer and the levels were going into the orange... I've turned them 90 degrees to the left (9 o'clock) and they're now in the green and not hitting the orange...

I've also made sure my recording levels are hitting green only in Soundforge (peaking at most around -7db) and just tried another record ... Nice clean sound! Awesome

I just didn't think that there'd be a problem with peaking into the orange levels - thinking only red was a problem for distortion etc.

Anyway...

I can now start recording some mixes! Thanks again buddy and everyone else for your advice on here

Before I forget to ask...

I have in Soundforge setup as 44.1 khz, 24bit, stereo...

Is this ok?

I have the option to choose up to 192khz, 32bit IEEE Float and Mono or Stereo...

Also my audio interface is a Cakewalk Edirol UA-25-EX (the old Roland model)

Are these settings OK that I have on it:

Sens on both XLR Inputs all the way down:
