Danny Howells at Rise (Boston) 11.5.11 Review
Each time Danny Howells has come to Boston in the past 10 years or so it's been a special night. Rise Afterhours has become his home in Boston since Avalon and Axis shut their doors a few years back.
This past Saturday was another one of those great clubbing nights out with friends.
I took the C and J Trailways bus down from Portsmouth with one of my roomates so I wouldn't have the hassle of dealing with my car for the night. I drive way too much as it is. I met up with everyone at Flash's Cocktails(next door to the club). After a few grateful deads to the dome I got into Rise around 1:30am and found Danny laying down some deep dopeness already to the dancefloor. Lots of familiar faces as well as lots of the youngins' that seem to be compromising the majority of Rise's patrons these days started packing the dancefloor. It was really nice having the music on both floors allowing people to escape the packed upstairs and still hear the tunes.
Danny kept it deep and interesting for the first couple of hours getting the crowd really packed and ready for it. At around 2:30 or so (in reality 3:30 due to daylight savings) the party REALLY started to get going with funky and techy bombs starting to be played. A Simon Garcia take on Marvin Gaye's "If This World Were Mine" really stood out for me. I wish I knew more of the tunes as I thought I was pretty on top of the music out there recently but I didn't really know anything that he was playing at all and loved it all. I hung out in the booth for quite a while to escape the dancefloor which was packed until about 5 or so. I wish the crowd would have lasted a bit longer like they did in May but it was still an amazing night!
Danny ended things around 6 ish after slowing it down to about 112 bpm and dropping awesome disco edits including one of Everlast - Goodbye and Grace Jones - Pull Up The Bumper! He also dropped Will Saul - Fast Lane (Fink Remix) from his Global Underground 24:7 cd from 2003.
Not a bad night at all for Danny Howells considering he "had one of the best nights he's ever had in North America" when he spun with Dj Three in Tampa the night before
