(FIrstly, I have searched but I'm drawing up nothing relevant and I'm hoping this is the correct forum!)

I'm ripping my vinyls onto my laptop but having a problem with hissing, popping and crackling through them (normally beginning and end, but some at breakdowns). Wondering if there are any programs I can use to remove the popping and such, and leave me with some nice clean smooth sounding mp3/ wav files?

hissing is due to dust, maybe you should just clean them , the fact of hissing at the start is probably because that's the point which is more damaged since you are dropping your needle at it constantly, happens to me too.

get new better needled and cartridges, not dj ones but really good sounding ones. wipe the vinyl over with something suitable (ask where you buy the cartridges at some hifi store, not a dj store, those people dont know upside down on shit). get help to adjust the needles. be really careful from now on when using your turntable and you should be fine. or buy CD/mp3 and delete/move this thread.

hey dude, thanks for the quick reply. my vinyls are clean (they in some nice cases and haven't seen daylight for about 2 years!), but are indeed slightly worn. so, any programs that can edit the little spikes out and clean the tracks up?

Do a Google search for "noise removal bundles/plugins" or "restoration plugins/bundles". Companies like Waves (X-Noise, etc) and Izotope have plugins for this, but they're pretty pricey. Check KVR's plugin database as well, you might find some freebies/cheapies:

Reading this has made me all nostalgic for vinyls :/

Last time I listened to vinyls we where in Port Edward at a back packer lodge, listening to Rodriquez on and old record player(from the 70's!) reverbing off the mountains.

For me, Waves X-Crackle using the Extreme preset has produced the best pop/click removal of anything I've tried.

IMO: waves crackle are ok for removing clicks at extreme cases but i wouldn't use it on everything, it seems to kill at bit of hi frequencies and audio doesn't seem to be as transparent as original after processing.

Either way you won't be able to remove clicks and maintain "clean/smooth" sound. I would suggest process some bigger pops/clicks through automating crackle removal plugins to turn on at trouble spots only (if its possible with the plugin you are using).

there is absolutely nothing wrong with a little bit of hiss here and there

...late to the conversation, and I don't have a lot of experience, but...

What mixer are you running through? Your phono preamp could be creating some of the hissing sound, so I would look to adjust the settings on that as well.

Everyone else is right, above, regarding having audiophile over DJ needles/cartridges, and balancing everything right for optimal playback.

I'd also point out that using plug-ins to remove the cracks and pops and such: be careful not to use it on the whole song, because if the plug-in isn't very good, it could end up cutting parts out of the song it sees as 'bad,' but aren't really. I've used some that did that, so I just focused on the bit parts that negatively impacted the overall recording.
