Feeltune Rhizome - standalone VST host

This looks pretty interesting: a bit of kit you can use to turn any VST into 'hardware': map the controls of the synth/effect onto the knobs and buttons and you've got a hardware version of your favourite VSTs.

It's actually essentially a PC dedicated to live music control... built-in soundcard, network support and a parallel port for some reason.

It's got its own built-in sequencer, sampler and mixer.

Quite pricey though: they've got 3 versions which start at €3199.

ppft what??

For that price you could grab a really good computer with a large screen, two ipads for control and still have money left over. These people need to re examine the feasability of these projects in the modern age of excellent general purpose hardware and shrinking budgets.

LOL. seriously that was awesome.

My friend has a 25 key midi keyboard (I forgot its name), and it has like 6 knobs on it you can map effects to and he got his for around 150. LoL

Yeah I'm not exactly going to run out and buy one myself but thought the concept was interesting.

I've always thought something dedicated to music centred around hardware control but which has the flexibility of software could be a good idea if done right... if only to reduce the number of bits you have to take and plug in when you go to a gig (think live production sets or maybe even DJing) - and this is the first thing I've seen which really does that.

Let's be honest, although laptops are cheap, they're not exactly ideal control surfaces - anyone using a mouse on stage should be shot - and nearly all touchscreen software is a big pile of shite when it comes to dexterity and feel... so why not integrate the laptop hardware (hard drive, processor etc) into what's essentially a MIDI controller, then you've got one box which does everything.

This is probably a bit more over the top than it needs to be, but not everyone's on a shoestring budget and some people might decide they're willing to splash out if it does everything they want. In fact I'd go as far as to say that if they did a €1000 version I might consider it if I was feeling rich. Maybe.

Yes, yes it is. But so's a toaster and you can't run VSTs on one of them either.

Anyway, if you don't care about it that's fine, just thought I'd point it out in case anyone did, even if only from a "nice idea, but let's hope someone does a better job of it" point of view

Yea I'd definitely like to see something like this a lot cheaper, so I can afford it and groceries.

Don't feel bad about posting it or anything, I think it's good to get news out. At least I got a good laugh out of it
