Dear tranceaddicts!

I have recently acquired some understanding of EQ(which means i now pull up and down faders where frecuencies are displayed).And having dome some reading, i pretty much try to follow the rule"cutting is better than boosting".In order to get practice with sound creation and recognizing stuff,im trying to recreate the patches within my main synth(z3ta+).After some frustration(and being unable to get really really close sounding stuff), i have started peaking on how the faders looked at the real patch,and realised that they dont care that much about this rule.Those crazy people boost without any remorse whatsoever.
However this is mostly the case with higher frecuencies(above 6k).So the question is basicly: Does that "rule" apply more for the lower frecuencies,the basses and beats and etc.?Or does anything go at making sounds,and one should only be more carefull at EQ the entire mix or tracks?
I dont want to confuse this with the typical"if two sounds are fighting for the same frecuency range, cut one instead of boosting both", im talking about single sounds, about the "if you want it to be bassier,cut higher frecuencies and viceversa".
I hope i wasnt too confusing and maybe someone will throw me some guidelines!!
