you need to learn skills of sidechain first

sure is all about compression,

bringing the mix upto level throughout after its complete

you have to bare in mind also the tracks being used need to be of a certain 'standard' to. Mastered etc otherwise quality will be lost here also, you cant polish a bedroom produced turd right? if its not halfway there itself already....

also, levels is key, consistancy during the mix, even if you have done the mix in ableton, levels is always key, its hard in the moment 'live' to keep the master mix levels nicely set, this can also be the case in ableton still, so a nice steady -4 db (example) throughout should do nicely, then once compressed, it will all sit nicely through the duration of your mix...

there is nothing worse listening to mixes that start off nice and loud then half n hour in your hitting the volume button to get it back level wise

My levels are generally balanced. It's just I don't understand how dj's and producers make their mixes sounds so legit. Especially those on the essential mix.

compress the fuck out of it.

i always run my mixes through a compressor, it brings up the quieter parts of the tracks and smoothes out harsh volume changes.

Can't you just do all that with proper volume levels and EQing while you're mixing? If the tracks you're playing are well produced, they should already have all the oomph needed, amiright?

false, you cannot adjust transient dynamics without using compression really. im sure these guys have a nice chain of sht. compressor, make-up gain limiter, maybe soem sort of imager, who knows. i just use a limiter on my shows, and it sounds pretty great.(not distorted or over clipped)
